It's not an idol. It's a symbol. Big difference. It's a pronouncement of our faith to the world. If we worshiped the cross and not Jesus Himself, that would be idolizing the cross.

I do agree to a point that, in some instances, the cross is shown to be some type of holy symbol with some type of power, but it's wrong to do that.
History will confirm that crucifixions were indeed performed on a cross or possibly a "T", not a "torture stake". Crucifixion generally kills by suffocation--it seems that some crucifixions were performed by simply tying the victims hands and feet, rahter than nailing them to the wood. There is a possibility Christ did not die of suffocation, but rather Hisheart gave out, evidenced by when his side was pierced and blood and water came out. He had already suffered a lot of torture before being crucified, along with the heartbreak of those he came to save turning on him.
Back to your original question though--as was already stated, the "tree" is in referance to the cross Christ died upon.

LBR I have often wondered if the cross' that the folks were nailed to were then hung from a tree.
Think about the idea of supporting a timber cross of the size needed to hold a full grown man.
To me atleast from a practical stand point the job would be much easier if the cross is hung rather than stood up and wedged into some sort of hole in the rocks or ground.
Also removing the cross' would have been much easier if they were hung rather than trying to wiggle them back up out of a hole.
I have wondered if that is the reason behind the two discriptions, one say's Jesus was hung on a cross, the other say's Jesus was hung from a tree.
Thanks

Gosh bro.Pirk, if they nailed you to a huge oak tree trunk 4Ft from the ground, won't it be considered that your body would be hanging from that tree? Just a thought.

It is common knowledge that Romans used a cross for crucifing people. Matt. 27:26 Then he release Barabbas to them, and when he had scoruged Jesus, he delived Him to be crucified... That pretty much settles it for me.
