Default How do you all overcome temptation.

Christian Friends,
I am presently fighting temptation. What is it??? Never mindInstead of yielding ,I am asking you. When your flesh feels like giving in. How do you all overcome the temptation. PLease reply. For me..I size up th econsequences with the yielding. That helps or maybe walk outside and putter with something. What do you all do?

Chuck7,
Here is my advice for ya. Flee ....flee from what is bringing on the temptation. There is much work to be done outside of your home. Do not sit around and try to logically over come temptation .God's WOrd says FLEE.Have a good day brother and "be filled with the Spirit , Speaking to yourself in Psalms , Hymns and Spiritual Songs singing to God from your heart. Draw nigh to God , resist and the devil will flee. You can bankl on it.
Thank you Jesus

James 1:12 (NASB)

"Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him."

In overcoming temptation:

1. Refuse to be intimidated.
2. Recognize your pattern of temptation and be prepared for it.
3. Request God's help.

2 Timothy 2:22 (NASB)

"Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord, with a pure heart."

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NASB)

"No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way for escape also, so that you will be able to endure it."

In defeating temptation:

1. Refocus your attention.
--Nowhere in the Bible are we told to "resist temptation." We are told to "resist the devil." We are advised to refocus our attention because resisting a thought doesn't work. Every time you try to block out a thought in your mind, you drive it deeper into your memory. You don't defeat temptation by fighting the feeling of it. The more you fight a feeling, the more it consumes and controls you.
2. Reveal your struggle to a godly friend or support group.
3. Resist the devil. James 4:7 "Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
How can we resist the devil?
a. Accept God's salvation.
b. Use the Word of God as your weapon.
4. Realize your vulnerability.

------------------
And no, I don't take credit for these thoughts. I got them from "A Purpose Driven Life."
It might be the best take I've seen on overcoming tempation in awhile, and I did this in a devotion yesterday and thought it'd be relevant to post here.

Thankyou ...I need to read that book. I've heard many good things about it. I'm not much of a follow the crowd type .However; I've heard nothing but good about that book.I really like the above statement you made. I believe you may have something there. Please keep in touch. I believe you may be able to help me break through something here. In fct that statement has been my entire depressed life so let me ask you some questions as this also may be helping out another brother as well.

!. I see this verse somewhat different from your first sentence of the above quote.{ Which I can't copy and paste} and believe me I want HELP real bad. So I'm not trying to argue but I need you to clear some things up for me.
2 Cor.10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; In this verse we are to take charge of our thought life. Where do these bad thoughts come from??

The rest of your quote I see as the struggle with the Romans 7 man and we are promiced that the Spirit filled 8 man now overcomes sin. How ever the Romans 8 man does this by.... "but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. "mortify means to kill something.Again ...something we do to our flesh.

I do not think there is an easier way out. If you have one that can be backed up with scripture PLEASAE let me know. The only success I've had that works 100% of the time is FASTING. That works. Other than that I'm presently doing my best to read more Word, pray, limit the TV use. and some moderate fasting.
Love ya,
Chuck

James
1:12
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

1:13
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.
1:14
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
These3 verses say a lot to me 1:12 tells me that one will be blessed when they are able to endure temptation, not simply running from it, but rejecting it. To me to overcome temptation is not to cut and run the second we feel the urge to succumb to it, but to stare it boldly in the face and through faith in Christ to resist it and move on. I feel that once you truly have over come temptation it will not be a temptation any longer, that is not to say that one would not be blessed for resisting even though they are still tempted.

Chuck 1:13 tells me that God will never tempt man! 1:14 says that every man is tempted due to his own lust, basically I feel this is saying that the lust/temptation is mans, the enticement may be of Satan's doing or simple circumstance.

I still have a great deal of work to do on temptation and giving into it, where I have been successful is when I grab the bull by the horns and toss it aside. Sometimes I feel like I am staring at an entire pasture of bulls, some of which sadly still win the battle.

PS I'm back in school so I can't get on hardly at all between 7:20AM and 3:15 PM
That is why I have not been replying so quickly. Last month while I was in my classroom the principal was looking over my shoulder while I was typing in a reply to Hunting.Net.....Instant conviction.

Chuck, we all have our burdens to bear, and we must face each burden at different levels of our walk. Remember when we were first saved how much we had to give Him. As we progress He reveals to us things that are displeasing to Him.

I don't know how you guys deal with temptation, but this is how I deal with temptation.

I strive for His anointing, this anointing is what drives me. I want to opperate in all the spiritual gifts necessary to walk a victorious Christian life. There may be someonetoday requesting for me to pray with them for a special need. I want to come before His throne boldly and without having lost a battle to sin. I don't say I don't sin, we all do. But we all have that certain sin, we battle with.

After all how long does the pleasure of that certain sin last, compared with God's flow of anointing? Regardless if your sin is over eating, how much can we eat. What if it's adultery? It doesn't matter, no thing on earth, can compare with His fresh anoining He gives us daily......
