I've had/heard many discussions on this person. Who was he? What was his significance?
I want to see yall's thoughts on this...who do you think he was. Explain. I'll post what I think later...

Heb.7: 1-4
[1] For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
[2] To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; [3] Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
[4] Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
According to the Dead Sea Scrolls, A king "without a father or mother or genealogy". Considered an Angel or even Jesus Christ himself, appearing thousands of years
before Hisearthly Incarnation. Also considered to be the Archangel Michael.
According to LDS tradition,Melchizedek's blessings of Abraham at salem is a priesthood aurthority, whose keys were restored to Joseph Smith along with the keys of Aaron's priesthood.

Gen. 14:18
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
14:20
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

Heb. 7:21

I do not know why but I have a hard time explaining my beleifs/understanding of him, obviously he was as scripture states a priest of the most high God, the Melchisedec priesthood is a "order" of priest of which Christ was one. If Abraham paid tithe to him he obviously was of the highest priesthood there was.
There is a lot of different schools of thought on the ties between Melchisedec and Christ, which I am sure others will bring to light here.

I believe Melchisedec was a "type of Christ." He had certain qualities that were unexplained and left the reader wondering. Consider the following:
Hebrews 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
Sounds almost "God-like" doesn't it? The verses that Taz posted further support this view.

Dave I agree, he was IMHO "type of Christ." This is one of the reasons that I wish that some of the books of the OT that were eleminated/lost over time still existed, I am sure there is more detail on him in some of the lost books.

In Hebrew scriptures there are angels who are priests around the Throne of God.
These angels burn incense to give an acceptable fragrance to the prayers of sinful man.
It is said Melquisedec was the angel Rafael in his duties as priests, therfore he had no flesh mother or father and no end. His order is of the heavenlies and not of earth, this is why Jesus belongs to this order.
The angel Sandalfon stands over the Throne, weaving the prayers of Israel into God's crown. Four Princes surround the Throne: Michael (right), Gabriel (left), Uriel (in front), and Raphael (behind). Other texts describe myriads of armies of angels arrayed around it. The earth is the footstool of God's throne.
Shalom
