(Submitted by: M. M.)
A.The spirit beings, endowed with tremendous power and knowledge, who are at God's service, are collectively called with the general name of Angels, "host of heaven," "principalities and powers." Several Scriptures make mention of them and of Cherubim (plural of Cherub), yet Archangels are only mentioned twice in the all Bible. The description of these Holy, spirit beings is very scant, except for the Cherubim that have four faces and four wings (Ezek. 10:20-21). There is no description of the Archangels in the Bible. The only one named is Michael in the ninth verse of Jude.
The Bible, although naming these Spirit beings many times, is obscure as far as their names (except Lucifer, Michael and Gabriel ), rank and specific tasks, with few exceptions.
There are some religious beliefs that make the Cherubim the same as the Archangels, but there is no biblical support for that.
Undoubtedly both of the two belong to a higher order of Angels: the Cherubim connected with and having proximity to God's throne (Ezek. 1 and 10). Additionally, Ex. 25; I Kings 8:6-7, and several more Scriptures, place the Cherubim in the Holy of Holies of the temple (Sanctuary) on this earth, which was a replica of God's throne in heaven: [/align]
[blockquote]" who serve the copy and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, 'See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.' " (Hebr. 8:5, quoting from Ex. 25:40).[/blockquote]
The only time the Cherubim appear away from God's throne is at the time Adam and Eve were ousted from the garden of Eden:
[blockquote]" So He drove out the man; and placed Cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life. " (Gen. 3:24)[/blockquote]
This Scripture is evidence that there are several Cherubim. Lucifer was originally one of them, directly associated with the throne of God (Ezek. 28:14).
The Archangels are involved in major events on the earth (and undoubtedly in the whole universe) as some passages in Scripture indicate (Dan. 10:13, 20; 12:1).
Gabriel (one of the only three named) was also involved in major biblical events ( Dan. 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19, 26 ) and may be an Archangel also, but the Bible doesn't say.
The Scriptures give little information on angelic beings. We would all like to know more about these extraordinary creatures, yet God has chosen, in this present age, to disclose very limited knowledge about them. In the kingdom of God all mystery will be removed:
[blockquote]" For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. " (I Cor. 13:12) [/blockquote]
It is better be safe and satisfied with what God reveals in Scripture, than speculate and be off target.

I have to keep thanking G-man for the e-sword he turned me on to.
Some angels are pointed out by name in the bible. One of the chiefest in my view is Michael. His name means "who is like unto God". I find it interesting that when Lucifer said "I will be like the most High" (Isaiah 14:14), who would be in his presence but Michael, whose name means "Who is like God".
I've already mentioned that Michael was called an archangel in Jude. In Dan 10:13 he is called "one of the chief princes". (which may help me understand the "pecking order" somewhat better). It was Michael that was in opposition to satan in a dispute concerning the body of Moses (Jude 9), and Rev 12:7 describes him leading an angelic army in heaven against the devil. I found Michael mentioned by name 5 times in the bible.

Then theres Gabriel . . .His name means "God is mighty". He's mentioned 4 times in the bible and he seems to be a messenger (prolly an understatement). He brought the message of the birth of John to Zacharias and the annunciation of the Saviors birth to the virgin Mary (Luke 1). He was also sent with a prophetic revelation to Daniel (Daniel 9:21).
Of course Lucifer and the Prince of Persia and prince of Grecia are also mentioned . . .I may get into a study of the fallen angels on this thread. I wasn't really considering "fallen angels" in the beginning of this study . . .but the 2/3 that are for the Lord .

Leaf River Mac I have very much enjoyed your thread here.
Just to make sure you are on your toes, so to speak, There is a name given to Satan or Satan"s angel I haven't seen mentioned yet ( I may have over looked it, I will check and see.) It is in Revelation.
What is the name?
Thanks

The word "Lucifer" in Isaiah 14:12 presents a minor problem to mainstream Christianity. It becomes a much larger problem to Bible literalists, and becomes a huge obstacle for the claims of Mormonism. John J. Robinson in A Pilgrim's Path, pp. 47-48 explains:
[blockquote]"Lucifer makes his appearance in the fourteenth chapter of the Old Testament book of Isaiah, at the twelfth verse, and nowhere else: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"
The first problem is that Lucifer is a Latin name. So how did it find its way into a Hebrew manuscript, written before there was a Roman language? To find the answer, I consulted a scholar at the library of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. What Hebrew name, I asked, was Satan given in this chapter of Isaiah, which describes the angel who fell to become the ruler of hell?
The answer was a surprise. In the original Hebrew text, the fourteenth chapter of Isaiah is not about a fallen angel, but about a fallen Babylonian king, who during his lifetime had persecuted the children of Israel. It contains no mention of Satan, either by name or reference. The Hebrew scholar could only speculate that some early Christian scribes, writing in the Latin tongue used by the Church, had decided for themselves that they wanted the story to be about a fallen angel, a creature not even mentioned in the original Hebrew text, and to whom they gave the name "Lucifer."

Angels obviously have a heavenly and an earthly ministry. There are prolly many activities in which the angels are involved . . .the greatest being worship. The picture the bible gives is one of continuous perpetual worship. Rev 4 and 5 describe a heavenly scene around God's throne in which there is continuous worship. John saw thousands of angels, "saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the lamb that was slain to recieve power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing" (Rev 5:12).
On many occasions God has used angels as agents to carry messages of comfort and encouragment and to make prophetical announcments. . . .we have Jacobs ladder as one example. Jacob was tireed and troubled, and after a long days journey he lay down to sleep with rocks for a pillow. The Lord appeared to him standing above a ladder that reached to heaven, and Jacob saw angels going up and down on this ladder.(Gen 28:22) I believe that they still come down and go back up ministering to needy souls.

(Mat 28:2-7)At Christs tomb, angels announced His resurrection. (Acts 1:10-11) After Jesus ascended angels comforted the disciples with the promise of the Lords return. (Acts 10:3-6) An angel did not preach the gospel to Cornelius, but told him where he could find a gospel preacher. I wonder why the angel did'nt preach the gospel to Cornelius? Maybe it is because God has commisioned us to do this in this age. . . . .I guess I may be off on a tangent here, but I see where an angel will preach the everlasting gospel. (Rev 14:6-7) shows that an angel will preach this gospel to the whole world. . . .(hmm interesting stuff)
Two angels delivered Lot from Sodom (Gen 19:15-16).
Angels closed the mouths of lions for Daniel (Dan 6:22)
An angel destroyed 70,000 thru pestilence (11Sam 24:15-16)
An angel set Peter free from prison chains (Acts 12:7)
An angel will bind satan. (Rev 20: 1-2)
