Default First bow hunt of the season.

Nothing spectaculiar for you pros but here goes.
Because it stays dark till almost 7:00 AM I didn't get to my area in the Green Swamp till 6:00. I was 2 miles up powder grade Reb in an oak grove/ cypress dome between 2 palmetto fields. I had my bow and back pack hanging on hooks I stuck in the tree. About 6:20 I thought I heard a raccoon tip toeing about 10 yds away. Wrong...it was about a 90 lb. hog. I could only see the silhouette. From then on I had my quick release on and an arrow in the bow. I was pretty high in the tree andthe hog still smelled me and let out an angry snort out ofit's nostrils. My round trip to this place is 70 miles so I will only be hunting 5 more times. There is another expensive stand in the area but it is probably for firearm for it was unmaned. I also noticed there were no acorns on these trees. Tha tblew my mind. I thought all oaks produced acorns. I will be back to the same area next Sat. and my stand facing the direction where the hog came from. I also need to check my sights and see when the earliest I can make a safe shot. Mosquitoes were fine Dave and so was the heat. Boredom and havin gto use th ebathroom got to me and I called it quits shortly after 9oAM. I only read a little of th eWord out there. It's a little challenging with w quick release and arrow in the bow.LOL

God bless ,
CHuck

Chuck, most of the game are in that peice to the Right(South Side) of
Powder Grade. Is the narrow bridge still there? The south side use to be
real swampy. Have you gone all the way to the Richlom fence?Powder
Gradesection was in Lake county when I use to hunt it. Don't give up on
the section! Good luck!

I've always hunted the Sumter County line. The biggest deer shot last year was shot where you are talking about near Richloam. The dogs chased I believe a 137 score 10 point in front of a hunter. I got one last year1 1/2 miles up Powder on the right hand side heading north. I hear hogs everytime on the left side.I like that area because it's not as wet and lots of oaks.. As you know most of the hogs are taken by that little bridge off of Tram grade. Lots of tough southern boys around that area and the road is very narrow. There is a foot bridge there . I have 4 hunters who invited me to hunt with them in the area near Richloam but I declined. I told Carl I would hunt with him by myself but not with a crowd. We shoot our bows together sometimes. There was only one hog tagged so far today.I didn't see any bridges other than the 3 main ones where the Withalochogee River runs underneath. The swamp is a little wetter as usual at this time of the year. LOTS of hunters. I try to stay away from the crowds. Poor birding in this area as well. I heard one warbler. Having only 2 wheel drive Reb I'm afraid to go to far on the skinny roads. I saw some fellows out there stuck today. My next vehicle has got to be 4 wheel drive.

This is the Green Swamp map. Are you saying the good place near Richloam is at the end of Tanic? I believethere is a lot of game killed there. Is this also the place where the wild turkeys live? They do tell me in Richloam you probably need 4 wheel drive and the hunters are ...a little rougher there.LOL
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck, you know what, I think Tanic Grade is the one
with the narrow bridge not Powder Grade. It's been 15yrs
since I have been there. Tanic, Three Run and Powder
Grades all go to the Richlom fence.
If I can remember right, Powder Grade was really loose
sand and when it rained it was a mess.
The turkeys are mostly around the Withlacoochee River
side (South Side) along the Overstreet Ranch fence and
some hogs too.

Yeah you are right. The 471side of the Green Swamp delivers more deer and hogs than the Rockridge side. Yes...the 3 mile run is narrow and super duper sandy.

Since you guys are knowledgeable of the green swamp ,I own some property right off it, near a state prison anyone familiar with what Iam talking about ? it is off I-4 and Polk city.

Is there any game there, all I have is the deed and satellite pics ,it looks all wooded and there is a large grove just south of it.

I wish I could go check it out with someone that knows the area.

Bro.Alex, that would be Polk Correctional and next
to it is Polk Juvinile Correctional.Yep, knew a guy
that raised fighting cocks on that road. Ha,Ha....

I know exactly the area your property is! Unless you
have a large piece of property, it would not be advised
to be shooting around there. Heck, you have Green Swamp
and Richlom WMA's around the corner, as the rednecks
would say.

Bro.Alex, go East on 1-4 to Exit 44, keep to the left
on exit ramp, turn Left onto SR-599 going North
untill you come to traffic lightabout one mile and
turn Right onto SR-557A and go about 1.5 miles
to Evans road and then turn Left go about 4 miles
untill you come to a sign that says Polk Work Camp
and turn left. I can't remember the name of that one.
Maybe your property is on Evans road and you won't
have to go to the Work Camp sign.

Alex,
I would love to check it out with ya. I know the area. This is where the Hunter Safety Course is offered. I know we have had some small disagreements over the past. Please know they mean nothing to me and stop by anytime for lunch or call if your ever in need or broken down in the area. Yes I would guess your area is loaded with hogs. I would be glad to check out your land with ya. I live 15 miles from there.
Chuck
PS You have my number ..call at anytime.
