Ibarrowed this from CharlieP on the Political Forum,
A federal judge ruled Wednesday that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance (search) in public schools was unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Lawrence Karlton (search) ruled that the pledge's reference to one nation "under God" violates school children's right to be "free from a coercive requirement to affirm God." The judge has granted legal standing to two families represented by an atheist who lost his previous battle before the U.S. Supreme Court. Please don't jump all over me for my thoughts regarding this. I know I'm in the unpopular minority but I'm not so sure this is such a bad thing. I really do believe the state should stay out ofsuchphilosophical matters as to whether or not there is aGod. I believe that is a matter we as private citizens and parents should handle with our children without state influence. I believe the idea of the state leading a pledge that affirms God most certainly conflicts with thatsentiment as well asthe concepts surrounding the founding of our country.
Before the american revolution we were, in a legal sense, trulyone nation under God. It wasaccepted that the athourity to govern came from God to the king by divine right. If you disobeyed the government you were literally going against God. After the revolution our new nation was formed under the concept that the authority to govern comes from the people. So with this in mind, the nation which was created by the people is under the people. Peoplecan choose whether or notto believe in God or to be under God if you will but it would be unconstitutional for the government to decide it is no longer under the people but rather under God.As americansitis incosnsistentto say the nation is under God but the power to govern eminates from the people withoutelivating the people over God.
I will tell my age here but Iremmeber my father talking aboutD-day when the Hole nation came together in Prayer for the boys that hit the beach many died that day and if it was not for prayer we would have lost DONT beleave me ask any person that was there swinning n the blood an let them tell you. This nation is on a down hill slide strate to hell. I was in NAM back in the early 70 and I would take all the prayer I could get/ When I was youg I throught that I was the badest person around I new nothing about what was to come.
You say that we should not say under God this country was build on God why do you think the people came here for to worship to worshio God openly Sylvan this is not put to you I just get so fed up with people that bash this country and God
I say this to anybody if you dont like this country GET OUT I will buy you a ticket myself. There is NO place on this earth that you have the openess to say anything in ofther countrys they will kill you or out you in prison for opening your mouth. To all the people that say take God out of this country, you had better thank God you live here or you would not be able to say it.
renfrowridge,
I think you and I must be about the same age. I did not serve in the military as I drew a high lotery number but had I been drafted I would have served proudly. My uncle landed at Omaha beach and was wounded in the buldge. I love america and am proud to be an american. I too hate to hear america bashed. But back to the topic of the pledge.

I agree, they came to worship God openly but they actually fled nations that were already under God. That was the problem. When government decides it is under God it follows that it has a duty to follow God's will. Problem is, who decides? Iran is a modern day example of a nation under God. It is an Islamic state and its government is made up of religious clerics who claim to make law that is the will of God. Can you worship openly in Iran if you are a Jew? Before the revolution, could you worship openly in america if you were not anglican? No, like I said before, before the revolution it was accepted that our government derived its power/authority from God, after the revolution government power/authority comes from the people. I simply want to keep it that way so I endorse the concept of separation of church and state as most certaily did the founders.
just my 2 cents worth... the government took the other 3 in taxes.
Sylvan, I am sorry but when it comes to God and Country I get all fired up, again I am sorry please dont hold it agaist me I am just a hillbilly that love his country and God. I had two brothers one was kill in nam and when we came back all this country did was spits on us for doing what we were ask to do for the love of God and country, somtimes I still think about it but that is not a place I like to stay to long it was a long time ago and I need to let it go. again I am very sorry
they only took 3 cents worth hay thats not fair they took 4 of mine
renfrowridge,
You have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to appologize for! I for one, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to this country. I am also ahamed as an american regarding how our Viet Nam vets were treated when they came home.
