Default Drinking (alcohol)

Just would like to get you guys thoughts on this issue:

Is it alright for us as Christians to drink in moderation? I don't mean get drunk (I know the bible warns about that), but just drink socially. Maybe have three or four beers on a Saturday afternoon or something? Let me know what you guys think.

We have had this conversation back around February. It boils down to a personal conviction according to the Romans 13-14 chapters. I know it is offensive to many on here so that is all I hav eto say about that. It seems about 70% thought it was a sin and about 30% thought ok in moderation. It is very dangerous my friend and very offensive in our culture. I for one do not have a problem with moderation. "It is not what goes into the the mouth that defiles a man but what comes out of the mouth that defiles a man."

That is what I tend to think as well. Sorry if it has been discussed before, I did a search and didn't find anything.

I am in total concurance with Chuck on this, moderation is key, alcohol can be the downfall of some, but so can eating or talking to much!

Jack, there are some that are on a small glass of wine during thier meals
prescribed by thier doctors. Europe does not have the high percentage of
heart and vascular decease as the Americans do. I'm not talking about cheap
processed wine. I'm talking about an American or European vintage wine.
Their's a chemical in the grape that does not let cholestral plague accumilate
in the arteries.
The3 highest fat and cholestrol eating countries are France, Spain and Italy
andhave less heart and vascular decease than the US.. Remember, just a small
glass of good wine at meal time ONLY!

I used to go crazy arguing this before my Christians friends. No where does the Bible condemn drinking, it does however condemn being a drunk.
I don't drink because it is not a good witness and have tried to give God all my weakness.
Just to put it bluntly, with all humility my brother, it depends on how close you want to walk with God. The more of you that you give Him, the more of Him will you receive...

This I say out of my own personal experience. I don't want anything to stand between Him and my own desires.

There's all kinds of "arguments" that go on about this one. In my personal studies, I have not found anything in the Bible that says drinking alcohol is a sin. Like Rev, I do not drink, because it is not a good witness.

Between you, me, everyone on the forum, and of course God, I feel the same way about smoking. I have a problem with this in the area of cigars. My personal convictions tell me not to smoke cigars, but I struggle to follow through with that.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I appreciate what you have to say. I heard that one before Reb and it is very true. Rev, you do speak the truth- the more we immitate Christ, the closer we can become to him. And I sometimes have a problem with gluttony - especially when frequenting the Golden Corral or local all-you-can eat chinese buffet.
