"If the eyes are dim with sorrow or sin, Scripture is a skilled ophthalmologist that makes them clear and bright. Look at the sun for an extended period, and it will blind you. Look at Revelation's sunlight, and it enlightens. The purity of snow causes snowblindness to the Alpine traveler, but the purity of God's truth has the opposite effect; it cures the soul's natural blindness." - Charles Spurgeon, The Treasury Of David, pg. 130
Like never before - we are facing a time of darkness, trouble, distress, despondency, astonishment, and injustice. Questions and doubts fill the air.
The Psalmist in Psalm 43 faced a similar time. How he responded serves as an example for all of us today.
He cried out to the Lord in this manner - "O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto Thy holy hill, and to Thy tabernacles"(Psalm 43:3).
Why did he pray this way?
Because "light" and "truth" are two personified expressions of God's love - intending to bring His people to a closer place in Him - of intense fellowship and worship with their Maker...of restored privileges, blessings, and prosperity...and higher aims and expectations.
"Light" represents the light of His countenance, the good that flows from His favor and mercy, and the joy of His presence.
"Truth" entails His faithfulness and the fulfillment of every one of His promises.
"O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me..."
Oh Lord, how we need Your "light" and "truth" to save us from the lies and spiritual darkness which fill our society and culture. How we need Your presence in order to stand before our enemies and the performance of your Word in our individual lives so that we may demonstrate - to this lost and dying world - the Faithfulness of our God.
1. We need our eyes to be enlightened.
The Scripture says in Psalm 19:8 - "The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes."
His "statutes" - mandates, precepts, appointments, charges, and rules given to guide us - are just and proper - showing us how we can please Him. His "commandments" - prohibitions and orders as to what to do and not do - are "pure" - clear, unadulterated, undiluted, free from darkness, without dross and defilement, and devoid of mixture and error. They "enlighten the eyes" - give discernment - directing in the way of duty - while making sin exceedingly sinful and showing redemption as the only possible solution.
"O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me..."
2. We need a flaming torch to brighten our path.
Psalm 119:105 tells us - "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
This "lamp" or candle shows us what is amiss and dangerous. It shines on our path - preventing our stumbling over obstacles...falling down precipices...or wandering into areas which lead to danger or destruction. It leads us out of ignorance or anxiety and into decision and stability.
"O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me..."
3. We desperately need understanding.
Psalm 119:130 says - "The entrance of Thy words giveth light: it giveth understanding unto the simple."
So many are filled with self-conceit, prejudice, and indifference. Hence, their minds are blocked from receiving the Word of Truth.
What is crucially needed is the explanation and clarification - the unfolding, declaring, or opening up - of God's insight and instruction.
"O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me..."
Are your eyes dim with sorrow and sin? God's Word can make them clear and bright.
"O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me..."
If you will pray this prayer, God will hear you and answer with a manifestation of His presence and the fulfillment of His promises to you and your family.
"O send out Thy light and Thy truth: let them lead me..."
These are the companion traits that God has given to us in order to lead us through the darkness of this world unto His "holy hill" of heaven - "...let them bring me unto Thy holy hill, and to Thy tabernacles"(Psalm 43:3).
Do you plan on making it to heaven some day?
If so - then don't forget to make this prayer a Daily Prayer.
You will only make it through this life if you have these two gifts from God - His mercy and the assurance that He will always keep His promises.
Therefore, don't go a day without them.
