Bro. Chuck I guess I should be, we do have black bear where I hunt, but since I have never seen one around here I have no fear. Ask me that same question if I ever see one while on stand and I might have a different answer, especially since I normally hunt from the ground![8D]

Taz,
I generaaly keep my eyes and ears on full blast and try to walk in the spirit. It is common to see moccassins and walk by hogs in the dark. We have bobcats and lots of coyotes. Gators are also common and more aggressive in the dark. Prayed up..big time. It's such a relief when you finally get to the tree and are settled in. Daylight is fine.
Chuck

PS We had an older man get lost there last year. They never did find him. The had lots of copters , horse clubs ets. No sign of him. 50 square miles

I shopped around for a bow a couple years ago so I could learn archery and start to bow hunt. Due toa shoulder injury, I cannot draw back a bow.[&:]

I bought a cross bow, as it is legal in Ohio, but I haven't worked with it yet, so I won't be out for archery season this year -- not that I have anywhere to hunt this year anyway.[:@][:@][:@]

(Please note: I'm not attempting to call cross bow hunting archery above. I mean to say I won't be cross bow hunting during the archery season this year!)

No problem JIm. Our compounds are not much difference. They are so accurate that some of the long bow fellows think we cheating. You almost can't miss if they are set up right.

I'm an avid bowhunter and can't wait for next Thursday (the 15) 'cause that's the season opener here. From day one of the physical therapy I've been doing this summer, I told the doctor that I HAD to be ready prior to Sept. 15th so I could get in some practice prior to the season. I just pulled back my bow last week for the first time since surgery. It hurt a good bit, I strained for 4 or 5 seconds getting it past the "breakover" point -- and then sent my first arrow right into the center of the bullseye from 25 yards! PRAISE GOD FOR THAT! I grouped my arrows all in the bullseye in a 1 1/2" group from there. I've shot 2 more very short sessions since then and shot out to 50 and 60+ yards with great results and my broadheads grouping right with my fieldpoints.

I spend a good bit of time praying silently with my eyes opened while on my stand and I carry a pocket sized, CAMOFLAGED, New Testament which I read at some point during every hunt. My best devotions take place in the deer woods.

And NO, I don't get spooked walking to my stand in the dark. I enjoy the "spookiness" of walking in the woods early in the morning while it's still pitch black. Many years ago I got unnerved a bit a couple times, but that's ancient history.

A buck has to be a pretty nice 8 point or better for me to use one of my two buck tags on him. I fill my freezer with does while I'm looking over the bucks.

That's because you used to be a sheriff. You have nerves of steel.
I still get edgy walking in. But would reather do that than go to the dentist or ride a roller coaster.
