Default The prayer from the Kansas State Legislature!

I got his from Jerry Falwell's website:

A while back Paul Harvey quoted a prayer and said he had more requests for it than almost any other he had used. Pastor Joe Wright offered it before the Kansas State Legislature. When this pastor offered the invocation, Harvey said he "told God on them." When he finished, three members jumped to their feet and indignantly shouted, "He can't talk like that!" Representative Delbert Gross called the prayer "gross, divisive, sanctimonious, overbearing." David Hailey called it "blasphemous, ignorant." Sabrina Sandifer echoed their indignation. Dr. R. G. Lee used to say he hadn't really preached unless he made somebody "hopping mad." So, listen to what this fellow prayed:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know your Word says woe to those who call evil good but that's exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values. We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of your Word in the name of moral pluralism. We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle. We have exploited the poor and called it a lottery. We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. In the name of choice we have killed our unborn. In the name of right to life we have killed abortionists. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem. We have abused power and called it political savvy. We have coveted our neighbors' possessions and called it taxes. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, O God, and know our hearts today. Try us and show us any wicked way in us. Cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of Kansas and who have been ordained by you to govern this great state. Grant them your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of your will. I ask in the name of your Son, the living Savior Jesus Christ, Amen."

I guess the truth hurt some of them.

Jesus condemned those who make a public spectacle of their prayers and those who speak many words in hope they will be heard (Matt. 6:5-7). The power of prayer is determined by the intent of the person, not the method of expression. Jesus calls us to examine our prayer before it is spoken. In contrast, Gothard tells us to cry out and then examine our prayers:

Yep people always get mad when the light of truth gets shined on them and its different than what they want to hear. Only the honest hearts turn from their way and seek the light. Those others stay in their wrong ways giving no care to the way the Lord has set for us but rather enjoying what they want to do their own way.

That sounds like something Fred Phelps would come up with, only it is toned down a little too much for him.

I think this is one of those internet myths. Prayers before the legislature are public record and are recorded in the journal. I have checked all the journals on the www.accesskansas.org site, then go to legislature and journals, and can find NO prayer like this at all. There have been many that have invoked the name of a great man like Paul Harvey and aligned by deception, when nothing of the sort occurred. This appears to be one of those cases.

I am always suspect of causes that have a good core, but have to lie at most, or misrepresent at the least the association. This particular one is a gotcha. You have to be careful in this day and age of the internet, and quick research of what you cut and paste, repeat, or even believe.

Truth in the end is a necessary vehicle.

As a Kansas citizen I was really interested in this when I first heard it. But then I too heard that it was just a hoax .... there doesn't seem to be any public record of it.

Friends,
None the less, I do rejoice in the fact that God has His children in political offices and all other aspects of life. I know growing up there was always at least one Christian in the work place. They always witnessed to me. In the army we had one Christian . Guess who he was roomed with ...me. And in basic training we changed rooms twice. His last name starts with a G mine a B. God really hunts us down. And I'm glad he did.
