Default Book of Mormon Animals

Questions for Mormons, about the Book of Mormon.
[ol]
[*]Why does the Book of Mormon mention the following animals: Ass, Bull, Calf, Cattle, Cow, domestic Goat (the Nephites claimed to have found the domestic goat!), Horse (the horse plays a major role in the Nephite and Lamanite societies), Ox, domestic Sheep, Sow, Swine, & Elephants (contrary to the dated information on this site, non-LDS indicate that there is no evidence of elephants in the New World and the mammoth and mastodon of North America have been extinct for thousands years--see Stan Larson's "Quest for the Gold Plates" pages 184-188? None of these animals even existed in America during the era and timescale of Book of Mormon times.[*]Why aren't animals such as Coatimundis, Deer, Jaguars, Tapir, Monkeys, Sloths, Turkeys, etc.. mentioned when they were animals that existed? They were unknown to Joseph Smith, but later discovered to have lived here at the time the Nephites were supposed to have co-existed with them.[/ol]

As it was a religious record, it would not focus on those aspects of the culture. The only reference to sheep I find is when they are talking about being the flocks of the Lord, and such. And that would be passed down in the religious records, from the teachings of Nephi, who grew up in Jerusalem. The same goes for swine. I find no reference anywhere of elephants. Also the family of Nephi brought livestock with them. And they weren't the first group of people to come to the americas, we believe that the Brother of Jared and the Jaredites came over first, they were wiped out by the Lamanites before the Nephites discovered them.

Default RE: Book of Mormon Animals

To Judyboi,

Book of Mormon Animals:
There are 16 animals and animal products mentioned in the Book of Mormon.
[ul][*]Ass[*]Bull[*]Calf[*]Cattle[*]Cow[*]Butter[*]Elephants[*]Milk[*]Flocks[*]Goat (The Nephites claimed to have found the domestic goat.)[*]Herds[*]Horse (The horse plays a major role in the Nephite and Lamanite societies.)[*]Ox[*]Sheep (This was a major animal in the Book of Mormon.)[*]Sow[*]Swine [/ul]
There is no independent (non-Mormon) archeological evidence that any of these existed in the area and time frame of The Book of Mormon.
