Default could this be true? (Mormon)

Brigham Young, (born June 1, 1801) between 1842 and 1846 took 18 women as his wifes then throughout the next years took nine more?Joseph Smith introduced the practice of polygamy and began by setting an example for the other Church leaders. The exact number of Smith's plural wives is still a matter of conjecture (estimates range from 27 to 84), but there is little doubt that polygamy caused immense problems for the Church and led to Smith's death and the destruction of the community. He lost the support of Sydney Rigdon, his prime counselor, who accused Smith of trying to seduce his daughter.
The Mormon churchis organized into wards (congregations) of 300 to 800 members, and the wards are grouped into stakes which consist of 6 to 10 wards. The stake is headed by a president, two counselors and a High Council of twelve members. A Bishop and two counselors head a local ward. Members of the church are expected to refrain from the use of tea, coffee, tobacco, and alcohol and to tithe their income. Where in God's wordare we given an example of this type ofchurch leadership? I still cannotfind it. I cannot find where the church has a head other than Jesus!Who would dare call himself the head of the church? Only a person thathas no care for God orthe soul of any other person. No southerner could be apart of this "church". Sweet tea is just as important in the south as water is to a fish.

Moose,
As a human I find your remarks offensive. To claim that I as a member of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints worship anyone but him is preposterous. I'm not sure where you got your information, but Sidney Rigdon did not have a disagreement about Joseph Smith and Sidney's daughter. If you want the truth, then go to the source. www.lds.org Here is where you can see what we believe. We believe that there is a purpose to not drinking and eating certain things. We also believe that polygamy served a purpose. If you want to know why, then request a visit from the LDS Missionaries and ask for information. Please be more sensitive of others beliefs. I will not be critical of yours if you can respect my decision to have a choice to follow my beliefs.

Hikchick, this what I believe,

1John 2:19
[19] They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

This is why you cannot understand the Bible. Where did Iclaim you don't worship Jesus? Please read the post again. Here are the question you did not answer when you could have but rather you attack me for my belief in your belief.

(1)Brigham Young, (born June 1, 1801) between 1842 and 1846 took 18 women as his wifes then throughout the next years took nine more?

(2)Where in God's wordare we given an example of this type ofchurch leadership?

(3) How many wifes does your husband have? If one Why? Your leaders clearly took many as a large part of your belief.

I don't want to keep asking questions that I know will not be answered. Bottom line, never said you didn't worship God, just that somebody believes that they are the head of your church. I don't know if you worshp him or not I have not seen anything to say you do. Sorry you didn't like my post, maybe next time.

Love the person hate the sin. Is the Bible the same now as it was 10 years ago? How bout 50 years ago? How bout 200 years ago? How bout 400 years ago? The Bible has never changed! It is still the same today as it was when it was written.

Revelation 22:18-19
For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Mormons are not the only ones that add to and take things away from the Bible. I just know that there are some on here that could answer the questions if they wanted to but they usually tell me to "go to the web page" or " Call the LDS Missionaries". If you believe the Bible why can't you answer the questions?

2 tim 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Colossians 4:3-7
Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Chuck God doesn't love you anymore than he loves Rebel. God loves every person. God don't pick favorites!

Moose,

Tell me your opinion. What do you think of this? Do you think it is true or not?
Are you trolling (Smile). You know its hard for us Latter-day Saints not to bite huh? What kind of bait you got on there buddy? (Smile) Looks like I"™ll try a quick taste!

I"™ll tell you what I know, whether I am wholly correct or not I can always be corrected.

Source: Brigham Young, (born June 1, 1801) between 1842 and 1846 took 18 women as his wifes then throughout the next years took nine more?

Porter: Probably true. In fact I think he had upwards of 63 wives, but I"™ll have to check my church history. Other than the fact that he must have felt he needed to abide by a commandment, I don"™t know why he did it. Could you imagine all the women"™s emotions you would have to take care of?!? Man, one is enough! What a great woman I married, but if I was commanded to take more"”Son of a gun, could you imagine the honey do list! Hunting, what hunting! Another gun, you got one last month! (Smile). Thankfully my wife is not this way.

Source:Joseph Smith introduced the practice of polygamy and began by setting an example for the other Church leaders.

Porter: True! With some exceptions. Joseph was commanded by the Lord to introduce plural marriage by God (Your choice to believe that or not. In addition the practice was commonly known as polygamy, but polygyny is actually the correct word. Man with plural wives. Women did not practice polyandry-Woman with multiple husbands). The exact number of plural wives of Joseph is actually not known, but the number in the quote is adequate and reasonable. However. many if not most of the women were married to Joseph after his death. Yes, for a short time some women were allowed to be sealed (married to Joseph) if they so desired. I found out just last week a 3-4th great grandmother of mine on my Dad"™s side did so. Surprise, surprise. The practice was abolished shortly after his martyrdom.

As to Plural marriage in general, Sidney Rigdon and his daughter. Partially true. From all accounts known about Rigdon and his daughter came much later when Sidney Rigdon was embittered and against Joseph and the Saints after Josephs martyrdom. Some accounts state that Rigdon was against Joseph marrying his daughter. Most accounts read however, that Sidney did not make a negative statement toward the union until he was confronted by a mob and basically plead for his life. The mob knew him to be a supporter and they were going to kill him. So, he accused the saints and Joseph of things they never did to save his own skin! He was one of Josephs most loyal supporters and friends until Joseph wanted Sidney removed from his place as a counselor. Sidney was further embittered when the Saints would not support him as Joseph Smith"™s successor. Then, he did incite mobs to persecute the saints. It was not necessarily the doctrine of plural marriage that caused any downfall of the Saints in Missouri as much as it was those who were angry or jealous, left the Church and did all they could to contend against it.
For more reading check out LDS Church history or the Encyclopedia of Mormonism.
Source: The Mormon churchis organized into wards (congregations) of 300 to 800 members, and the wards are grouped into stakes which consist of 6 to 10 wards.

Porter: True. An optimal stake will usually have a maximum of 12 wards.

Source: The stake is headed by a president, two counselors and a High Council of twelve members. A Bishop and two counselors head a local ward. Members of the church are expected to refrain from the use of tea, coffee, tobacco, and alcohol and to tithe their income.

Porter: All true.

Question: Where in God's wordare we given an example of this type ofchurch leadership?

Porter: Good question. Definitely alluded to in early Church leadership as mentioned in Ephesians 4:11-12. Prophets, Apostles, Evangelist (Patriarchs), pastors (Bishops) and teachers etc. All for the edifying of the body of Christ. Definitely Jesus Christ and the head. These leaders are the built upon the foundation of Christ. He is the head, the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:19) Any position of leadership must be to edify him. The offices of Bishop and deacon are mentioned in Philippians 1:1I. Other references to a bishop are found in 1 Tim: 3:1-2; Titus 1:7.

Hope this is affable,

Best Wishes,

Porter.

Moose75,

First, allow me to apologize for the manner in which your questions have been addressed. With that done, let me try to shed some light on your questions. I will admit that I do not have the answers to all of your questions right here at my fingertips, but I will try to answer what I can now, with a follow up reply to answer the rest.

To start off with your first question about Brigham Young. He did have multiple wives, and yes it was a practice that was used by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the early years. It was used, in part, as a vehicle if you will, to multiply and replenish the earth. This practice of polygamy was done away with (at least with true members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) when it was made illegal to practice. An excerpt from the Articles of Faith, or what we believe is as follows: We believe in beingsubject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. How many wives Brigham Young had is not an answer I have readily available, but if it is really important for you to know I can research it for you.

The second question you haveis "Where in God's word are we given an example of this type of church leadership?" In order for me to answer that question we need to go back in history and see how the Church of Jesus Christ was organized as led by Jesus Christ during his mortal ministry here on earth. We know from the Bible that the church was led by Jesus Christ and that he had twelve apostles (Peter, James, John.....) Now, referring back to the Articles of Faith referenced above, article of faith No. 6states: We believe in the sameorganization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. If we look at how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints is organized it follows this pattern. It is important to note that Jesus Christ is the head of the church. The President of the Church serves as the mouthpiece for the church, but is not the head of the church. This is an important distinction to make, but not difficult. It is the same as what the Catholic religion believes in relation to the Pope. They do not believe the Pope is God, and we in like form do not believe that President Hinckley is God. Below him is the quorum of twelve apostles. The same organization that existed when Christ was here. The further breakdown of the leadership of the church (i.e., Stakes, Wards and Branches) are all organized in like manner to facilitate the teaching of the gospel to the world. Ward leaders are subject to Stake leaders who are subject to Area leaders who are subject to the first presidency and the quorum of the twelve apostles. It feels like I am being long winded and I apologize for that, but in an attempt to describe things to you accurately, I find no other way.

As far as your third question goes, I was lucky to find one woman that would put up with me[8D]

As far as refraining from tea, coffee, tobacco and alcohol, this is true. It is contained in a modern day revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith. It is entitled "the word of wisdom" and is contained in the Doctrine and Covenants, a book that we believe to be modern day revelation. We believe that the things contained therein, if followed will be of benefit to us both temporily as well as spiritually.

As far as southerner's becoming a part of this "church", many have done it...don't know how, but they've done it

If you have more questions and are genuinly(sp) interested in learning more about what we believe, I would be more than happy to try and answer your questions. With that said, I have no desire to "bash" as it is commonly referred to, as I don't feel like that does any of us any good. We are all God's children...even if we don't act like it sometimes[:-]
