Hello from a newbie and questions re:Book of Mormon Veracity
Hello to everyone. I am new to the site. I have been lurking for months. However, I registered and would like to join in. Lots of good advice and comments from all of you. Thanks for your help even though you didn't even know it.
In this forum I noticed that there were several questions concerning the Book of Mormon. I can see that Judyboi has has done a remarkable job at attempting to answer a cadre of questions. I'm wondering if it would be helpful to post one particular question in a post rather than have so many questions in one thread. Just a thought.
Anyways, looking forward to getting to know all of you. I do live in Utah although I have not lived here my entire life. I spent much of my early years living in East Tennessee (Knoxville, Cookeville).Although I was baptised into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) when I was eight,I could not literally say that I was converted until age 17. I spent some of myteenage yearsstudying Catholicism (actually chasing a girlfiend who was Catholic) and studying with Lutherans and Baptists. I also spent some time in England and had ocassion to meet with various Anglicans and Anabaptists.
However, at age 19I felt impressed and chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and was assigned to serve in Southern Italy, predominantly in Sicily. What a marvelous place! What great people! The food was awesome!A few years later, I met and married my wife who is from Houston, Texas (Maw always wanted me to marry a Southern Belle, I came close-A Southwestern Belle!) We have two boys (one living and one hanging out with all the posterity that has passed on before him).
If I ever get time off from my job I enjoy Hunting and being outdoors. I enjoy Elk, deerand Pheasant hunting the most. However, my in-laws are setting me up for a Wild Boar hunt near Victoria, Texas that I am really stoked for. I am hoping to get in some quail and geese while I am there as well. Not to mention some tasty cajun fried catfish.
My favorite brand of firearm is Ruger. My favorite firearm would be a difficult choice, but the the Super Redhawk .44, my 7mm Mag and my O/U Red Label are are probably at the top of the list. I enjoy Jazz, Blues and Some CW music. Morea than any of this, I love my wife, kids and God. That said, ifI can, I will answer questions re: "Mormonism" the bestI can and support the young buck Judy as hewas sitting at the table first.
Be forewarned, my responses would not representthe official position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they are my opinion. However, I would say that I attempt to stay on top of my own beliefs, learn about and respect others beliefs, but most of all, be a good, kind Christian.I look forward to hearing from you all.
Porter.

Welcome to the board Porter, I don't post too much on the Morman threads. From what I've seen I don't agree much with Mormanism. However my experiance with them is limited and I prefer to just follow along. Anyway . . .hope you don't have a thin skin, but mostley there is a pretty good group of folk here.
Welcome again and God Bless

Hello Porter Rockwell
Glad to have you on the forum. I too enjoy the Elk hunting, just not very good at Elk finding. Tenn. has some pretty landscape to it, early this year I made a trip to Somerset to pick up my tractor. Drove through some pretty country side.
It seems like it would be a heck of a change to the country side in Utah.
You have in-laws willing to set-up hunting trips for you.... now I would say that you are blessed.
I would like to say that I admire the way the Mormon LDS folks really work at getting folks to church. I am concerned about the things they teach them once they get them there though.
When this forum first re-started the was a thread "What do Mormons Think" (I think that was how it was titled). There was a very well educated Mormon fellow that attempted to answer many questions.
When it was all said and done it left me just as sure at the end as at the begining that the Mormon faith isn't correct.
Is it in-correct enough to bar a Mormon from Heaven, I don't know.
My bible say that if a person knows/accepts thatJesus is God and does what Jesus has commanded him to, to love his fellow man then he is saved. Beyond that I don't know where the line is drawn or if there is a line.
Porter Rockwell I don't want you to feel like I am attacking your belief, I do my best not to do that. That isn't what this forum is set-up for, and if that was what it had been set-up for, I along with most the other folks here wouldn't post on it.
That being said please understand that I am just saying what I think, not trying to tell you what you think.
Personaly I think the Mormon faith is founded on nothing more than John Smiths fancyfull thoughts.
I believe Jesus completed the job when he was here in the flesh. I don't think he needed a new "New Testament" to complete the job for him.
When we see the events surrounding the introduction of the New Testament it is very clear that it wasn't done in a cornner but out in the open. Jesus did his work in the open with no seceret rites. His revelations were accompanied by many public miracles.
If he were to un-vail a "new-New Testament" I am certain he would do so in a fashion at least equal to the manner in which the New Testament was revealed.
One of the most disturbing things the Mormon church teachs imo is the idea that with enough good works we will become Gods. There is only ONE God, that is all there ever was and that is all there ever will be. I know the verse about men being called gods in the Old and New Testaments but they have nothing to do with men becoming Gods in Heaven.
Unless I am mistaken Satan tried to make himself equal to God, and that is what got him kicked out of Heaven.
Welcome to the forum, this post should get the ball rolling for you. Start some threads on the few items I have brought up here and I am sure we will have some intresting discussions.
Thanks
Mr-Pirk
