I edited the New Testament to suit my own beliefs. I took out scripture I disagreed with and published my own version of the Bible. I was and still am a VERY popular person.
Who am I?
Good question Ifferd. If I remember right, I think it's Thomas Jefferson? Or one of our other founding fathers?
I find it interesting how often modern Christians cite our founding fathers and don't know this about Jefferson.
The only time I cite them is to point out that they put great importance on religion -- not necessarily Christianity. When Christianity is attacked, all religion is attacked (from a secular, institutional point of view). In fighting for freedom of religion, we are fighting for Christianity. So citing the founders is still a benefit (in the correct contexts).
There's one instance that I know of where a monk inserted a verse when it clearly was not in original transcripts. It has been discredited, but some Bibles are still published with it in... I forget the specifics.
In general, I think not. The King James is a translation.
