1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
1:15
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
1:16
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
1:17
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
1:18
No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
John is saying we beheld{eye witnesses} the Son of God in the flesh. He is Full of Grace and Truth. John is proclaiming that Christ was born way before him.Although on the earth Elizabth {John's mother concieved John first.} John had already stated in the earlier verse He was in the beginning. The Word ,made flesh. And all Goodness is in HIM .Jesus is as good as it gets.AMEN .No man hath seen God at any time.
The following is a note I jotted down from Matthew Henry's Commentary comparing the law and truth John 1..17
The law of God is holy, just, and good; and we should make the proper use of it. But we cannot derive from it pardon, righteousness, or strength. It teaches us to adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour, but it cannot supply the place of that doctrine. As no mercy comes from God to sinners but through Jesus Christ, no man can come to the Father but by him; no man can know God, except as he is made known in the only begotten and beloved Son.
Have a great day,
Brother Chuck
AQ little while before you joined HNI, Chuck, I put up a thread that I thought was inertesting about Christ, bread, and the Word.
Christ is bread (the last supper), Christ is the Word (as in your post), and man cannot live on bread alone, but on every word from the father's lips...an interesting connection.
I just found it, and bumped it up so you can read it.
Chuck I just wanted to write and tell you that I am enjoying this daily study. This is all new to me so pardon me if I don't respond alot to them. I just wanted you to know that I am indeed reading them daily and appreciate you doing this and everyone else as well. Thank you. Paul
Paul ,
Thank you .It is helping me too. I usually read one chapter in the morning.5 min.maybe.This is taking me around 35 min. I am enjoying it though. You always get somrthing new and useful any time you read the scriptures.
