Rally Planned in Support of Concerned Parent Arrested at Son's School

By Jim Brown
May 3, 2005

(AgapePress) - A Massachusetts pro-family group is planning to hold a statewide rally in support of a Christian parent who was recently arrested and hauled off to jail after raising objections to pro-homosexual curriculum and discussions in his son's kindergarten class.
Lexington parent David Parker had scheduled a meeting with the principal of Estabrook Elementary School and the town's director of education. His reason for the meeting was to once again ask that his six-year-old son be opted out of classroom discussions and curriculum endorsing homosexual "marriage." When the school officials told Parker they did not have the authority to grant him that parental right, he said he would not leave until the request was granted.

Parker was then handcuffed and arrested by Lexington police, and forced to spend a night in jail. Brian Camenker, who heads the Article 8 Alliance, was with Parker at the time of the arrest.

"To watch a man go through this in America is a very, very frightening thing," Camenker states. "There is some bad stuff going on, and this [incident] is a direct result of the gay marriage ruling in Massachusetts."

Arrest and incarceration, says Camenker, were only the beginning. He says Parker was also unjustly banned from the campus by the superintendent of Lexington schools.

"He's not only charged with trespassing, but [the superintendent has] given official notice that [Parker] may not go on any school property in the entire town -- even to pick up his kid in emergencies," the Alliance spokesman says. Camenker explains that if Parker is found on any school property, he will be arrested immediately. "You know, they're very arrogant and hostile about this," he adds.

Chapter 71, Section 32A of the General Laws of Massachusetts state that parents or guardians shall have the right to exempt their children from curriculum that involves human sexual education or human sexuality issues by making such a request in writing to the school principal. Parker had requested such numerous times via e-mail before the meeting at which he was arrested.

Camenker's group plans to hold a statewide rally in support of Parker on May 15. His attorney, Harvey Silvergate, maintains Parker's son was subjected to "coercive indoctrination" by being required to remain in the classroom. There is a difference, the attorney says, between "academic education" and "socialization or indoctrination."

I'm confused was it a class dicussion or things that were sent home.

after the boy brought home a book from the school featuring gay characters.
Police arrested Parker on charges of trespassing at the Estabrook Elementary School and he spent the night in jail.

The book in question, "Who's In The Family?" introduces children to different types of families, including a family with two fathers.

"This is propaganda. This is meant to form things in a child's mind at an early age," said same-sex marriage opponent Brian Camenker, of Article 8 Alliance.

Parker said school officials have continued to tell him he has no right to control whether his child is taught about gay marriage.

"What I am saying is, because of the same-sex marriage law, people are treating it as a mandate to teach the youngest of children. It is not a mandate to teach the youngest of children, particularly if parents say, 'Hold on, I want to be the gatekeeper of the information. It is not that I don't want my child to ever learn it, it is I want to control the timing and manner,'" Parker said.

"They make the book available for families to read with their children if they choose to. If they choose not to do that, that is perfectly fine. They don't have to do that," said Lexington Schools Superintendent William Hurley.

BTW I don't agree with the school doing this just want to know the whole story.

from another site:

For David Parker, the first alarm went off in January, when his 5-year-old son came home from his kindergarten class at Lexington's Joseph Estabrook School with a bag of books promoting diversity.

Inside were books about foreign cultures and traditions, along with food recipes. There was also a copy of ''Who's In a Family?" by Robert Skutch, which depicts different kinds of families, including same-sex couples raising children.

The book's contents concerned Parker and prompted him to begin a series of e-mail exchanges with school officials on the subject that culminated in a meeting Wednesday night with Estabrook's principal and district director of instruction. The meeting ended with Parker's arrest after he refused to leave the school, and the Lexington man spent the night in jail.

I don't think this has anything to do with Christianity but more so of a parent rights getting superceded. My 6 year old will learn about sex from my wife and myself, and no one else at that age. What next, Bestiality? If I were there, Id be out protesting this. They tried to pass this crap in Texas about 7 years ago. Before hand they sent a questioner home to parents to see what they thought of the curriculum. The curriculum covered everything from homosexual acts, anal sex, and masturbation. Needless to say, it was shot down real fast.

My question, When did parents lose the right to raise their kids?[:'(][:'(]
