Interesting development.
I, as well as our districts math dept. head, are having to put together a 3 week program to try to teach homeschool kids 4 years of science and math. We have had many homeschool kids enter our district due to the fact they can not pass the states math and science test. Most all of these student passed the english and history tests, but missed the mark in science and math. The highest score in science was 50. Which is still 25 points away from the 75 mark held by the state. I personally do not know what to do. I truly do not feel I can cram 4 years of science in 3 weeks. I have to cover the basics in physics, chem, anatomy, and biology as well as many advance topics of each. I almost want to tell them, it is a little late, but ill give it my best try. Im just feeling a little anxiety right now.[&o]

Sounds like the parents who homeschool theri kids need somewhat of an education !!! [:'(] Like , send your kids to school !!! Do these parents pay for this service or not ?

There's no way you can cram that much into them in three weeks , as I'm sure you already know . If I remember correctly , all parents who opt for home schooling their children are still responsible for keeping up with state standards . Perhaps you should be reporting them for neglect of their education . [:@]

I believe given the correct parents, homeschooling is highly superior to any other form. But some homeschoolers are overzealous in that they are doing it SOLELY for religious reasons and they themselves are not prepared to teach the kids.
If you look at recent history, kids that take competitions such as national spelling bee etc. were in fact home schooled.
In that particular case, the father was an engineer and the mother was a physicist.

I stay at home with my kids. Not sure if I will home school yet or not. My spelling and righting skills SUCK.Im a crack shot at math and science. My wife is the book girl.
Where I live my kids will be on a buss for well over 1 hour, unless things change in 2 years. They hade a very good school up the road .It was ran by MOMS and DADS,was out of the church.BUT the state mad them close there doors. They want the kids to be bussed so the state can get a new school built close to here.THEY WHAT TO MAKE A ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE.From 1 to 12 now how can that work.
Well good luck BURNIE I do not think what these parents have done is right at all.I think it is a crock of crap to have you try to fix there lazyness.
Burnie, since we're going into summer, why not consider a special science summer school class and lab that is at least 4-5 hours a day with homework and is 2-3 months long? Invite parents to attend whenever and as often as they can and use the experience to develop a science/math teaching class for other homeschool parents so you don't run into this situation again. Just a thought but I would think you can make a significant gain with this level of instruction and probably come fairly close to at least half or more of a traditional 4 years of science and math. Another thought is to require the same students to attend a 2nd summer school session next year so you have a reasonable chance of covering 4 years worth of material. And if you really want to jazz things up, create a special advanced science/math summer lab that prepares students to excel in college in these subjects.

Elkin, I have a K-8 school in the area that I patrol and that school has a high level of academic excellence. The kids really get quality instruction and parents are heavily involved in the school. Another benefit is that kids don't slip through the cracks as the teachers see the kids from year to year and are able to help a kid's new teacher learn his/her problem learning areas and focus on them.
On a side note, my wife and I are enrolling our 5-year-old son in a christian school that currently runs k-5th. The school plans to expand to jr high and then high school as the # of kids enrolled increases. It can be done and does have some additional benefits as noted in the above example.

That's what im going to have to do, except the kids only get about 2 months off. I also have other programs to do this summer. Ill structure this course on a 6 hour day, for a month and a half. Im also held by the constraints of the testing dates which fall in the middle of July.[:@]
I just have this feeling this is going to be a loosing battle. Can you say, "Teach for the test". Something Im highly agianst.[:@]
