I also saw the documentary last night and had previously heard there was criticism of the police for not entering the building even though it was clear people were being shot inside. The explanation I had heard was that up until that event the first priority of any police commander was the safety of his officers and even though they knew there was a crime in progress, entering the school would have put the officers on the scene at an unacceptable risk. I have also heard that since Columbine there has been a re-evaluation of that policy in certain circumstances, such as school massacres, where police officers would be ordered into extremely dangerous situations to stop a particularly heinous crime in progress.
I'll bet they didn't mention that harris and klebold were turd tampers.
That would be real journalism. What were you thinking?
Although I normally appreciate what the History Channel offers, they still gotta sell their after shave and denture cream. The facts about Klebold's and Harris's buddy system would turn too many stomachs and thus too many channels......but the hell with the complete facts,... make some cheese popcorn and snuggle in for the documentary!
Watched it, and it pissed me off all over again. Still amazed at the LEO's non intervention..."Well, we DID follow protocol and procedure!". I've seen excuses for their poor proformance from other LEOs in print and other sources, as if a written procedure trumps every event. Want an example of proper response? A shooter was killing people at a church in Fort Worth a few years back...same kind of target rich, unable to defend themselves environment. An off duty LEO who lived across the street grabbed his uniform shirt and raced to the church and engaged the gunman, who promptly killed himself when confronted with someone able to stop him. THAT is a heroic officer, not the whimps at Columbine.
Charley, it is difficult to disagree with your post.
According to the broadcast on the History Channel, police entered the building about 3 hours after the two killers began the shooting spree. During that interim, of course, the murdering and bombings were taking place. At one point, the library door was open and the police were within earshot of the actual murders, most of which appeared to take place in that same library.
I also found it interesting and frankly bizarre, that the father of one of the boys, called 911 and said something to the effect, "I think my son may be involved in this." That appears to be in rather stark contrast to claims that the parents knew little or nothing of the weapons cache compiled, including over 90 various bombs.
