Default Media bias

Correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that I heard that Syria pulled the last of its forces out of Lebanon over this past weekend. These last remaining forces were intelligence forces in the Bakka Valley, I think. To the extent this information is correct, that Syrian forces really have withdrawn, this is a pretty significant event and a major plum resulting from the Iraq campaign.

Did I miss the newspaper headlines and the leading stories on prime time television news trumpeting this substantial benefit of the Bush doctrine? Feel free to comment on this oversight of the news media.

While it is too early to make any definite pronouncements in this regard, allow me to speculate a little about the possible consequences of this news. Syria long has been living off the fat of Lebanon. It has been said that if Syria pulled out of Lebanon and hence lost the injection of wealth into the Syrian economy that is siphoned off from Lebanon, that the autocratic leader of Syria -- reputed to be a state sponsor or terrorism -- could not long remain in power, his people would overthrow him or demand democratic elections such as those that took place in Iraq and those soon to take place in Lebanon. So, as a result of our Iraq policy Lebanon appears to be headed to self-governance and democracy after long being under the thumb of a foreign dictator and Syria itself may be headed towards throwing off its dictator who is a state sponsor of terror -- time will tell in that quarter.

Why hasn't the news reported this? I saw reports of Ted Kennedy bloviating about Abu Gharaib prison on the anniversary of the breaking of that story. I guess that is news worthy but not successes of the Bush foreign policies. Then again, maybe I just missed it.

"news" is a subjective term. 1/2 the florida state university students don't know their state capital and can't find it on a map. Do you think that Syria would mean anything to them? They probably think it's some sort of breakfast food.

Around here all the "news" puts on is: the Packers, the need for more taxes, and how conservatives are nazi's.

I'm sure 1/2 of Florida state college students wouldn't know about Abu Gharaib prison either, except Kennedy and company keep talking about it. It is one thing to put events in context, good and bad, etc. but the mainstream media is still largely silent on the good things going on, except when it has to be covered like the Iraqi elections, and even then they try to cast a negative tone on it.

That's why there's a term for it - media bias. That's why the news channels like ABC, NBC, CBS... are losing viewership - they're losing credibility. So are many cable networks and newspapers like the NY Times and others of their ilk.

People are much more savy and have more options for news including the internet and unique cable news networks.

The TV network news and most major city newspapers are blatantly biased to the left. Even when trying to state facts, the wording they use betrays their true feelings.

Are you guys nuts? Media Bias towards the left? Come on you conservative radicals. I went out to ABC news, this was on the front page.

Conservative groups and politicians appear to be waging a campaign to impeach, recall or otherwise pressure judges with whom they disagree. But amid Constitutional issues and threats against judges' lives, not everybody agrees it's a good idea.

They are obviously supporting the conservatives here. Come on guys, anyone can see it.

BEIRUT, Lebanon Apr 30, 2005 "” Cheering Lebanese some carrying banners reading, "Finally!" drove east Saturday in a convoy of 100 cars toward the abandoned Syrian intelligence headquarters, celebrating Damascus' military withdrawal from their nation after nearly three decades.

Meanwhile, a U.N. team met the Lebanese army commander at the beginning of its mission to verify Syria's pullout after 29 years of military and political domination of its smaller neighbor. That pullout was completed Tuesday.

Hundreds of people waving Lebanese flags and pictures of exiled Christian leader Michel Aoun drove in a honking and cheering convoy from Beirut to eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley town of Anjar.

However, they were blocked a few miles from the town by Lebanese troops, who had taken over the area apparently to prevent a repeat of celebrations by residents and anti-Syrian activists. In evacuations of other sites, activists have swept in with Lebanese flags and paint to erase Syrian military symbols.

The group planned to hold a celebration in Syria's former intelligence headquarters once the nerve center through which Damascus controlled much of the country's affairs. The site was a stark symbol of Damascus' power as the place where Syria decided policy in Lebanon, including who ran for office and who was arrested.

The group largely comprised supporters of Aoun, a former army commander who waged a war on Syria in 1989 that ended with his exile in France, where he has been lobbying for a Syrian withdrawal since. He has set May 7 as the date for his return to Lebanon.

Also, about 1,000 Aoun supporters celebrated Syria's withdrawal in the Christian village of al-Qa'a, about a half-mile from the Lebanese-Syrian border.

Waving pictures of Aoun and Lebanese flags, they shouted, "Freedom, sovereignty and independence!" the slogan of Aoun's Free Patriotic Movement. A speaker at the rally said some Syrian soldiers remained in the mountainous areas, but a Lebanese security official could not confirm the claim.
