The new plan being touted is to lower benefits. My god, wake up people, the "republican" party is filled with democraps and you keep voting them in office..................
(AP) Democratic legislators join a rally against the privatization of Social Security, on Capitol Hill,...
WASHINGTON (AP) - From the buttoned-down confines of a Senate hearing room to a boisterous outdoor rally nearby, Democrats took on President Bush and his Social Security proposals with gusto on Tuesday and rebuffed pleas for bipartisanship from frustrated Republicans.
"If he's going out to push for privatization, let's help him pack," Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois said to cheers from a sun-splashed crowd on the lawn across the street from the Capitol. He was ridiculing Bush's heavily publicized 60-day tour to build support for his proposals.
"Personal accounts unravels the Social Security safety net in a way that makes it hard to find common ground," said Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, one of several Democrats who criticized the president's recommendations at a lengthy Senate Finance Committee hearing.
Bush is becoming more of an unpopular lame duck with every passing day. His Social Security privitization plan is headed to the same dumpster as Hilary's medical insurance pipe dream.
He will leave his second term without accomplishing much of anything meaningful. One thing his policies will do: elect many Democrats in the next congressional elections. By then, as the economy heads south, people will be fed up and there will be a knee jerk to hold someone accountable for the mess this country is in. Remember the phrase that was popular when Bush's father ran for re-election? "It's the economy stupid!" I believe Americans will soon be voting with their wallets. The party in power is gonna get their arse kicked.
Part of me hopes that SS gets so screwed up, it goes away forever. It's a stupid plan, illegal in any other setting, which has been doomed to failure since it's inception. The original plan has been distorted and lost.
Sorry if that's too cold. I sure am glad I don't have to pay into that scam!

Clint
Clint, I really think you are on to something with that thought. Afterall, it is a giant stage we are observing - not completely set yet, and still guessing at the final players, but a very carefully thought out plan nonetheless.

If we only knew how much of the social security money paid in gets wasted on "special interest" projects and not put back into the program, we would be shocked. As far as I'm concerned, it's a dumb idea.
Think about it for a second... the government is taking YOUR money from YOU to save it for YOU because they (the government) think your too stupid or don't have the self control to save it yourself for when you get older. All the while earning money on YOUR money and spending it as they see fit. And heaven forbid you don't pay enough in (small buisness owners like myself), well you get in trouble.....For not letting the government save YOUR money for YOU!
I feel it should be optional, if you want to pay in fine...good luck to you getting it back. As for me I can save my own thanks. Whats the worst that can happen? We (taxpayers) get stuck providing and paying for those who didn't save their money.....hey we frickin do that already!!
I think Bush has it half right, we should do away with it completely and only provide it as a voluntary request from the people.
Can't do that because it would cut into a huge source of money the government uses to make it'self bigger and more intrusive.

That would be the ideal scenario, but you know it won't happen. Entitlement programs are EXTREMELY hard to get rid of because we have a certain contingent of the population that has the attitude of "it's owed to me" whether they're getting ripped off by the system or not.
It just boggles my mind how a system that is so corrupt and screwed up can be "fixed" by further insuring the congressional spending of our money on special programs etc.
