Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Interstate Gun Transportation

I wasn't sure which forum to use but this seems political.

I am moving from Connecticut to Oregon soon and plan to transport my guns cased and boxed in the back of the pickup. I have a cap. Lots of other stuff will be in front of the guns and on top of them. What laws am I under? Is this mode of transport ok? What are the options?

You should be fine with the situation you describe, you are protected by the Gun control act of 1968 (as modified) to cover your situation. In essence, if you are transporting your firearms in a manner legal in your state of residence, you are legal for travel through any of the other states. To be absolutely sure, there are several websites you could check for more specific information including the NRA, Gun owners of America and the Second Ammendment Foundation.
If you have a Pistol License in CT be sure to turn it in after completing the move, or the State Police will have a coniption fit in CT. That happened to me when I moved to GA. The local Sheriff got a call from the NY State Police Gun registration unit and laughed his butt off when I explaned to him that I had forgotten to send my pistol permit back.
I'm not sure about the gun laws in Oregon, but be prepared for a more gun friendly environment than what you are accustomed to.
Good luck on the move.

Amen, Coastie. You're OK under federal law, but keep a sharp eye on state and local laws and ordinances. One thing I recommend is keeping all of your ammo in a separate locked container. That's just one way to show you had absolutely no access or intent to use them in a criminal manner. That helps calm down high-strung officers in anti-gun locales.

As long as it's cased, unloaded and the rounds and the firearms are NOT kept in the same compartment I believe all states allow it.

What I find amazing is it was only within something like the last 15 years that interstate transportation of a firearm was decriminalized (I believe)

As long as they are cased I believe they are classified the same as luggage. If you don't take them out in sight they should be fine.
