Default Speaking of schools and taxes...

What are your area's public schools like? Here, they look like the Taj Mahal, even in rural areas, but especially in the handful of counties surrounding the outer areas of Detroit. My daughter will be in high school next year. The place was just finished last year complete with soaring 40' atrium ceilings, balconies, pool, theater... the place is impressive. But, why? Do kids need such a place just to learn? My high school was no different - it was considered state of the art in both function and design back then. Now it's a middle school that was replaced with a bigger, fancier high school. Yes, our taxes around here would make you cough up your left nut if you knew how high they are, but does this make it ok to build such palaces for our kids?

Same here, Huge brick and block buildings with every one of the newest conveniences that comes down the pike.

Then to "accomodate" the gang bangers etc. they take defunct small stores, spend millions fixing them up and have hundreds upon hundreds of satellite schools for these poor oppessed gang bangers and other assorted idiots.
Then they scream that they need more money.

My high school was private and built in the 1800's. to this day they still have cinderblock walls and open the old doors with skeleton keys.

voted as 2nd best HS in the state.

our schools do not seem to be overly extravagant.

they are not run down by any means, but we do not have 40 foot ceilings either.

i think they're just right.

ten bucks says that money goes to teacher's pensions/salary/bennies.

big bruha around here lately, Muskego school district (in waukesha) blew tons of extra money they had on plasma tv's for the lunchrooms, teacher's lounge etc.

funding should be cut by at least 30% in wisconsin.

Nope, It's all going for updating existing buildings our high school opened in the early 60's and so were many of the other lower schools. They put buckets in some of the class rooms when it rains. Were also getting a new Synthetic football field and all weather track.

And instead of cutting back on huge pensions or making teacher's pay into SS or taxing their pensions or making them pay for some medical insurance...
they go after the taxpayers.

same same everywhere.

badshot:

I agree 100%. Let's through out all the crap (pools, TV studio equipment, etc.) and get back to math, science, history, and ENGLISH. Most of the highschool grads in my area can't do math without a calculator. Teacher says, "As long as they know how to add, (the concept) it's not important that they know .86 cents from a dollar gives .14 cents back. Ask most of our 6th graders what 11+13 is, and they can't tell you the answer within 3 seconds.

Failure of the system to teach!

Much worse however, is the elaborate administrative buildings we have to pay for. The kids don't even use these buildings and they have more $%^&* than the school.

Here, they are up to date, but not even close to extravagant. We have what we need, but nothing more.

We shent a whole lot of mony here on schools( buildings) & other related cost, even for the schools lawyers.

Many millions sit in a perment trust fund for by mineral royalities moneys & many millions spent yrly & most of the property taxes we pay is also for the schools- maybe low by some standards but they have gone way up to .
fancy building & socilist - i mean social skills & alt sex edu, yes it be nice if they stuck to the basics in many things related- sports to they dont mind spending on in big time high school ,college, etc

While droping things like pharmacolgiy&some bioligy studies etc etc as unneeded.

The logic is the school sports are money makers?( but then they say the childen dont& cant stay in wy because there are not many jobs here)

They have givein some kids lap tops for home , use( back when they where much rarer & much more expensive) - but had no musical insterments( only one ones they all had to share in class?) at all for his use back when he went.
