Default Fish are also on the hit list

Got hold of a letter that South Dakota's governor recieved from the animals rights group, PETA asking him to "pardon" the state's fish, the walleye pike. The letter makes a case for fish and how they shouldn't be captured and eaten...

Dear Governor Rounds:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the world"™s largest animal rights organization, with more than 800,000 members and supporters. In light of recent studies demonstrating that fish are intelligent animals who feel pain, we are writing to request that you declare walleye pike, the state fish, off limits to fishing.
We ought to protect walleye pike in a manner appropriate to a state symbol"”ensuring that they don"™t suffer needlessly at the hands of anglers.
Fish may not be as familiar to us as the cats and dogs who share our homes, but scientific studies prove that fish are just as intelligent. Allow me to offer just a few examples:

Biologist Culum Brown, Ph.D., says, "œFish are more intelligent than they appear. In many areas, such as memory, their cognitive powers match or exceed those of "˜higher"™ vertebrates, including non-human primates."

Fish have excellent memories. In a University of Edinburgh study, fish who learned to escape from a net retained the ability 11 months later. The scientists said that, for a human being, that would be the equivalent of remembering a lesson learned 40 years before.

Scientific research cited in a recent edition of Fish and Fisheries magazine shows that fish learn by watching other fish, recognize and remember one another, and exhibit social behavior comparable to that of primates.
Oxford University research has determined that fish can complete some mental tasks that are too complex for dogs.
In light of the scientific evidence demonstrating the cognitive abilities of fish, and given the unarguable fact that fish feel pain in the same way and to the same degree as mammals and birds, it is only a matter of time before society views hooking fish through the mouth and ripping them out of their natural environments with the same revulsion that we feel about cruelty to dogs or cats. Imagine hooking a dog or a cat through the mouth with a large hook and dragging them behind your car. There is no escaping the fact that fishing is egregious cruelty to animals.

We implore you"”as a first compassionate step that is only sensible"”to protect South Dakota"™s state fish, the walleye pike. Shouldn"™t the state fish be protected, not violently abused?
I am sending along some additional information about fish intelligence. Please contact me at 757-622-7382. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Karin Robertson

Dear Governor Rounds:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the world"™s largest animal rights organization, with more than 800,000 members and supporters. Gee , I wonder what the vastly larger HSUS thinks of that statement ...In light of recent studies demonstrating that fish are intelligent animals who feel pain, we are writing to request that you declare walleye pike, the state fish, off limits to fishing. Why just the walleye ?
We ought to protect walleye pike in a manner appropriate to a state symbol"”ensuring that they don"™t suffer needlessly at the hands of anglers.
Fish may not be as familiar to us as the cats and dogs who share our homes, but scientific studies prove that fish are just as intelligent. As smart as a cat or dog ? Pffffttt ! Allow me to offer just a few examples:

Biologist Culum Brown, Ph.D.An ARF ., says, "œFish are more intelligent than they appear. In many areas, such as memory, their cognitive powers match or exceed those of "˜higher"™ vertebrates, including non-human primates."Publicly debunked on Mythbusters .

Fish have excellent memories. See previous .In a University of Edinburgh study, fish who learned to escape from a net retained the ability 11 months later.

Total BS , ever seen a seeing eye trout ?
In light of the scientific evidence demonstrating the cognitive abilities of fish, and given the unarguableinargueable fact that fish feel pain in the same way and to the same degree as mammals and birdsNo reputable study supports this ., it is only a matter of time before society views hooking fish through the mouth and ripping them out of their natural environments with the same revulsion that we feel about cruelty to dogs or cats. Most cultures don't eat cats and dogs , all eat fish . Imagine hooking a dog or a cat through the mouth with a large hook and dragging them behind your carIllegal eveywhere but Korea .. There is no escaping the fact that fishing is egregious cruelty to animals.

We implore you"”as a first compassionate step that is only sensible"”to protect South Dakota"™s state fish, the walleye pike. Shouldn"™t the state fish be protected, not violently abused?

First the state fish , then it will be all fish .
Fish are cold blooded , dim witted beats fit only for the frying pan . They are not as smart as non-human primates , or even dogs and cats . That they might have a dim awareness of pain has only been postulated in a single clinical study conducted by an ARF scientist , all other studies have shown that their nervous system is too primative to register pain . Mythbusters conclusively showed that goldfish forgot where the path through a very simple maze was after only thirty seconds , not forty years . I'm 45 , and I can't remember a blessed thing that I learned when I was 5 . Can you ? What a bunch of flakes ...

Okay, if fish are so damned smart, how's come I can catch the same fish on the same lure TWICE? Answer that, Mr. Peta Head.
