i went down to subway for lunch, and on my way back i pass by the main post office for the city. today being the 15th, there will be alot of people there to mail their tax returns, particularly considering the extended hours that the p.o. is staying open.

so, due to this increased traffic, a group of anti-war activists decided that today would be the best day to stage a protest in front of the post office. their flier is labeled "Where Your Income Tax Money Really Goes". it goes on to give graphs and statements in support of their position. now, my personal opinion aside, their activity is protected, and i would never deny anyone the right to protest.

my problem with them, is one of the last things printed on their flier....

under the heading "What You Can Do" is a list of things, such as demonstrate, write letters to congress, etc.

no big deal...until i get to this:

"Refuse to pay all or part of your income tax. Though illegal, thousands of Americans are openly participating in this form of protest. You can take control of your paycheck and avoid contributing to the military. Contact us for information or referral to a counselor near you."

excuse me? did you just advise people to evade their taxes? that's great, convince these people to do this, and when the IRS catches up to them, you'll be mysteriously absent.

and, as if that wasn't enough, the next paragraph reads:

"Contribute resisted tax money to an organization working to help people or to an alternative fund that pools tax money from resisters and gives grants to human needs and peace groups."

so, on top of advising them to illegally refuse to pay their taxes, you want them to give YOU the money. that way, when the IRS comes after them, not only will you be mysteriously gone, but you'll be mysteriously gone WITH THE MONEY THEY WILL NEED...thereby forcing them into the incredibly precarious financial situation of owing back taxes and not having the money to pay them...

though i am an admitted liberal, i can only conclude that these folks are both criminals and crazies.

Some people will do ANYTHING for buck. Sounds like one of those Nigerian scams to me, let's get BB to investigate. Maybe this should be consider subversive, terrorist, or treason. After all, if we all stopped paying our taxes, the US government would fall.

On the other hand, once the government takes all your property, sells it to a foriegn government, and locks you up, then you will have three sqaures, free health care, and no more taxes.

When I read your post I thought the same thing, as well as " great, the soldiers are there, so you want to short change them at the expense of their life."
