I totally disagree with his defintion of "veteran" and he's being a turd.
although, I do have a slight beef with the bennies that are bestowed upon those that go into the service and never see combat.
I worked with alot of these guys, ranged in service from 2 years to 30+ and NEVER saw one day of combat.
Combat vets are a totally different story, my hat is always off to them, especially WWII, Korea and Vietnam. But non combat vets putting the taxpayers on the hook for years because you drank discount booze and got free training while at camp pendleton is a little absurd.
Tard
I would never want to utter your referance to a room full of "Non combat" Vets who drank discount booz, got free training etc...etc...etc..You would exit that room on a stretcher[:'(]

I have uttered those words with non combat vets on many occasions, and they laughed and agreed with me. so I ain't too affraid of any repercussions.
I have uttered those words to combat vets too -- and they agreed with me. I had the pleasure of serving beer (free by the way) to 2 WWII combat vets that could barely walk. I have relations that are Vietnam combat vets, my brother in law was sent home after his second injury wherein he was the only one in his platoon to survive -- he never took one red cent from the goob. He's a proud man.
It's all a matter of feeling like you're "owed" something.
spare me your "I got a free uniform, and a free ride through college, adore me" crap.
1) I argue microscopically, if you bring up the issue of "well they're getting it so should I" -- I don't buy it. School teacher's around here rape the public, that doesn't make it right for everyone.
2) I have an old neighbor that was in the RESERVES and never left the milwaukee area for his "service" . He's 76 years old and blames his hearing problems and bad eyesight on the fact he was in the "military" -- he's getting thousands in drug benefits and eye care . He sat behind a desk for one weekend a month and filled out paperwork.

If you sign a contract are you obligated to fulfill that contract? The government has batallions of lawyers to insure that we that serve/served held up our end of the agreement/contract, now that it is time to pay the piper, there are those like Steve Buyer trying to weasel out of it. Peace time or war, a man injured in the military should be able to receive the benefits promised when he enlisted and signed that contract. There are those that will and do attempt to take advantage of this in about the same proportions of the general population that will attempt to work the system for all it is worth.
Is there any doubt in your mind that the flight deck of an aircraft carrier is the single most dangerous place in this world to work regardless of the defcon set at that moment? How about a Coast Guard small boat working alongside another vessel in heavy weather or an Air Guard PJ going into the water to rescue a person in distress, Marines on embassy duty in some of the worlds ****holes and Army and Airforce folks doing all of the above and then some.
While peace time duty, as a rule is safer in that you are not getting shot at on a regular basis, it is no less hazardous to your health in other regards. Workers comp covers the majority of workers in civilian jobs, the VA is supposed to be the servicemans workmans comp and we are getting screwed.
My neighbor across the street is a diesel mechanic and works for the reserves in Milwaukee - Milwaukee is a REAL hotbed of military action...
He has a guaranteed pension and health care when he puts his 20 in ...
Getting the picture?
There is a Coast Guard PSU (Port Security Unit) from Milwaukee that has been in Both Gulf wars, the Balkans and Afghanistan as well. While Milwaukee may not be the center of anything worth protecting, they produce some damn fine Soldiers and Sailors.
Tardfarmer, could it be that you are a tad jealous? BTW, you really p*$$ed me off with the "noncombat vets drank booze and got free training...." I agree with what AJ52 said also. You say that to a room full of vets and you might wake up in Fat Lip, Wyoming - if you get my drift! [:@]
