Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default The Pope

I am not Catholic, so I have different views than much of the world right now. I'd like to throw a few questions out, maybe to learn, maybe to voice my opinions and or frustrations. Tard, (and the whomever else I may offend) please don't take this wrong. I'm honestly trying to learn, and again, be bull-headed loud-mouthed self.

I've about had it with the Pope stuff. I mean, really, why is the Pope suddenly the most important man on earth? Sure, the guy did a lot of stuff in his life that may have helped the world out a bit, but to half-mast our flag, drape flags on federal buildings, billions tuning in to the funeral? Sorry, but I'm not sure when the Pope became more important than Jesus, but it sure seems to me as if it has happened.

Ok, blast me. I can take it.

My wife and I were discussiing this last night. I find it amazing that the ultra liberal media is covering this so widely.

My guess is that they're doing it to NOT report on other things.. minutemen etc. etc.

Will expand on this in 1/2 hour, have to go to a meeting.

one word: RATINGS

regardless of any perceived bias in the media, they realize that their audience, both conservative and liberal, are generally religious people, and that a significant number of them are catholic. an even larger number, while not catholic, respect the pope. as a result, they know that extensive coverage of this event is the only way to remain competitive in the ratings, which is the holy grail of tv journalism.

I don't think it's ratings. I don't know of anyone that isn't seriously getting sick of all this hype (even me).

If they were showing the catacombs under Vatican city that would be different, but they're just showing the outside

of the vatican and the millions of people around it... It's pretty worthless programming.

Why no word of the border situation? Why no finanacial news?

Reagan got as much coverage and he was the leader of only one country.
Yeah, OUR COUNTRY!!

World learders (former) die all the time. We don't honor them that way. I think it's a combination of him being the leader of Vatican City -- a country -- and respect for Catholicism. Nothing wrong with resect like that in my book, I just don't like the lie that's being told -- that flags are lowered because he was the leader of a country. Unfortunately, you have to tell this lie, or the ACLU will file a lawsuit. They love the power they weild due to this country's historical misinterpretation of the first amendment.

funny you should say that. Our ultra lefty governor Jim "Bingo" Doyle has lowered the flag at the state capital to half mast for the pope.

The ACLU and Wisconsin Freedom From Religion organizations are going after him.

Doesn't make sense to me why a lefty would be honoring the pope

It's just interesting to me that we are backing this thing the way we are, showing our support kind of thing. Smoke and mirrors, another "show".

I thank the hype for 2 things.
1 It got the press off the Shaivo story
2 It kept them off the wedding on Saturday for a while also!
Beside that, He was also a great man.

being a Catholic with Polish heritage I am glad for all the coverage . I can see your point about overdoing it I think it's simply because of ALL the good this man has done over the last 26 years
