Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Wow, sounds like something fairly large. I don't know what's going on in your part of the country, but I get the feeling most bomb squads deal with packages mistaken for explosives, or the occasional pipe bomb, not large-scale explosives. I suppose it could be a whole mess of homemade bombs, though.

My family has felt the ground shudder and heard windows rattle from a single pipe bomb going off 1/4 mile away, but they definitely didn't feel a concusion.

That's interesting, especially since the same thing happened here today at about the same time. I heard it over my police scanner. I don't know about the feds being involved but it was "supervised" by the Knoxville police department, which is about an hour away, which I found incredibly odd.

Dang, the Feds get to play with all of the fun stuff.

Wonder if it might have been some souvenir shells that someone's grandpa brought back from the war? Happens all of the time that artillery shells are found in people's basements or attics.

My uncle, who works for a big excavating outfit, told me of a story about a guy who blasted a pond in the area. The guy had grossly overestimated the amount of ANFO needed to make a hole in the ground for a pond and ended up breaking most of the windows in people's houses 1/4 mile away.

I don't know if this applies but many departments do not have EOD (Bomb Disposal) experts so they rely on other departments providing them with mutual aid. Also, many smaller departments will join a regional bomb team to reduce their costs. In return, they get the assistance of larger departments' EOD teams.
