Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Interview

I have to conduct an interview with someone who is old enough to remember the Vietnam War. If you"re a former veteran, protester or a neutral bystander feel free to post. All thoughts are appreciated.

How old were you in 1968?
What is your earliest reminiscence of the Vietnam War?
Were you qualified to be drafted? If so, how did it make you feel?
What were your thoughts about the Vietnam War in 1965? In 1968? In 1973?
If your opinions about the war changed over time, why do you think they changed?
How did your parents feel about the war?
How did your friends feel about the war?
Were you actively involved in fighting the war or in protesting against it?
Did you know people who aggressively protested against the war? How did this sway your opinions about the war?
Do you remember any of the following events: the Tet Offensive, My Lai, Kent State, or the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr.?" What did these events mean to you at the time?
What politicians did you support? Why did you support them?
How did you view the Vietnamese people?
Did you support the decision to withdraw from Vietnam? Why? Did the decision to pull out come too late or too early?
Do you believe that we could have won the war in Vietnam? If so, how?
Looking back, do you believe that our involvement in Vietnam was a mistake? Why or why not?

You're not going to ask that guy questions about his service, are you?

That would be tacky as hell and warrant a punch in the face.

I believe VC and maybe Logs served during the war. They may be willing to answer some of your questions. If you truly want to understand how well that war went, you'd certainly get more factual information from somebody who's a vet. I'd help you out but I was only 9 in 1968 and I really wasn't thinking much about the war then.

In 1968, I was only 7, so I can't be much help either. I could ask two of my brothers-in-law who served in Vietnam. One of them served in the 1st Cavalry and is 1 of 6 that made it home from his unit!

My advice.... Give 100% total respect to Vietnam veterans. They earned it! If asking questions, don't go overboard. There might be a lot of things deeply buried that they don't want to talk about.

Buckmaster...I would be happy to help. I am a VietNam Vet, serving in 67-68 during the Tet Offensive. After reviewing your questions, what is the purpose of this interview?

Also maybe it would be best to take this off-line because of the number of questions and I could send my answers directly to you. If you prefer to have all here view everyone's answers , I have no problem with that either. Whatever you think is best.

Great.

This is a homework assignment. My teacher believes I will better understand our history if I talk to someone who has lived through it. So this is my chance.
