Ok kiddies ,
who can tell me why this is a very bad idea ? Here's a hint:
It involves the Constitution .
While I've often gone on record as saying that I have no sympathy for felons , how long would it take this same lawmaker to think that everyone should have one too ? [:@]

Even when I was at Motorola they were doing research on the "smart card" which unbeknownst to the average joe, would hold every piece of personal information on you - short of your bathroom habits, unless you tell your doctor.
Unky sam and state goobs are getting bigger and badder as time goes on.
While your concerns for this being abused are valid, I tend to support it for convicted felons. Once convicted, they have lost many of their constitutional rights and the right to privacy is one of them. If this technology would actually work, perhaps it would cut down on the number of headlines concerning 9 year old children disapearing from their bedrooms and neighborhoods.
I know that technology has come a long way but I do question the ability of a GPS based device to actively track and locate anything on a 24/7 basis, especially a person that has not been restricted to being in a particular place full time. Technology is a wonderful thing and can do many things for us but it is not magic. Radio engineering has come a long way but the realities of the world we live in and the environment in which these devices are expected to function are limiting factors that have to be considered.
The data bases Tardfarmer refers to, already exist and may be accessed with a minimum of fuss or bother once an individual has been identified. There is no need to process this information and load it onto an implantable chip, most of the time all that is required to access it is your name and date of birth input by a police agency or, more likely, a financial institution. The key then is the identification of an individual. In short, your right to privacy was compromised the first time you opened a bank account, got a drivers license or applied for a loan. Every scrap of information existing about you is available someplace requiring only a little effort to locate and then use or abuse at leisure.
The implant part really bothers me, I would have no problem if they did an ankle bracelet type deal with felons on probation. With the exception of castration for pedophiles I have a real problem forcing a felon to have surgery.

As I've said before, if we distrust these convicts so much that we feel the need to track their every move, put them back in prison. It's the only way to be sure they're not up to anything. Like some have said, they've already lost many of their rights--put them where they belong.
I don't care for electronic tracking and I don't care for digital implants. Those are two slippery slopes we're treading now.

i have a friend who believes the goverenment is secretly tracking all of us through chips in our cellphones, blackberries, etc. sometimes i wonder if he ain't right

The fact that they have the capability disturbs me enough as it is.
I like technology as much as I do guns, but both can hurt you if you don't think about their usage in a serious manner.

Oh yea I live in fear of being tracked by the government!!! Man that might know that I hunt, fish, work and spend time with my kids! Heavan forbid if they started to find out how much TP I use!!![8D] Tell your friend to use a little common sense and figure out how much money it would cost on a daily basis to implement this! It would take BILLIONS of dollars just in the computors and storage of the data just to start it up little lone the man power to analyze it all.
