Sources in the U.S. Attorney's office told NBC that Smith was expected to plead guilty.
The images were of young boys and the investigation started in Germany, the sources added.
The Boy Scouts of America has yet to comment.

VESTAL -- A 54-year-old Vestal man, who has been involved in local youth baseball as an umpire and coach, has been charged with five felony counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child.
Gary L. Mack, of Terrace Drive, Vestal, was charged Monday by the Broome County Sheriff's Office. The charges stem from an investigation into child pornography found on Mack's personal computer, Detective Sergeant Patrick A. Isenburg said Monday.
An examination of Mack's computer downloads showed more than 3,500 images of suspected child pornography, Isenburg said. More than 300 of the people in the images have been identified, although none are local children, Isenburg said.
Mack had no comment when contacted Monday night.
The investigation began when a local computer repair company discovered the images while servicing Mack's computer, Broome County Sheriff David E. Harder said.
A forensic examination by Broome County Security Computer Analysis Technical Services revealed images depicting sexual acts between adults and children, investigators said. The children ranged in age from toddler to pre-teen, according to Detective Norman L. Rhinehart of the Broome County Sheriff's Office.
Mack is accused of downloading the images to his personal home computer during the past year, Rhinehart said.
Local agencies used the database of the National Center for Missing Children to help identify children in the images, Isenburg said.
Mack is scheduled to be arraigned April 5 in Town of Union Court. Further action is pending in Broome County Court, officials said.
Mack's most recent youth baseball involvement was last season when he worked as an umpire for the Endicott Umpires Chapter. In the past, he coached teen baseball in Vestal.

Looks like one sicko slipped through the cracks though.
I don't think it's epidemic or growing on a per capita basis, I think it's just reported on more often.
How many of these freaks could even get a hold of kiddie porn before the internet?
Also, way back when, molested children did not dare come forward for fear of the stigma attached to having been molested. I know of several people who were molested as children. They never went to the cops.
I just hope when caught, they have a really really really really fun time getting bent over a cot in prison, and squeal with glee when their skulls are caved in.

I have no problem with the scouts making their own rules. I'm the president of a youth org (much smaller) but we make our own rules. We don't take any tax money however.
I think this guy could have helped keep an eye of pedophila by making a big stink about homosexuality. If they did let homo's in parents would have been more vigilant about their scout leaders.

You would have seen alot of parents NOT sending their kids into scouting. As a father, I would NEVER have sent my kids to scouts knowing that it was run by dykes and turd tampers.
