Morphine for Schiavo ? Can ANYONE explain that ??

Supporters of the Schindlers said Terri Schiavo's breathing became increasingly labored during the day. An attorney for the Schindlers, Barbara Weller, said hospice workers began giving Schiavo morphine to alleviate pain brought on by her body's failure.

Weller said Schiavo cried when her mother hugged her Saturday night.

"She knows what's going on. She was trying to vocalize something with Mary," Weller said. "The governor should know that Terri still knows who her mother is and she's extremely distressed. She's not a vegetable who doesn't know what is happening."

Now wait a dang minute. A brain dead woman who cannot feel pain needs morphone to aleviate the pain ?

I agree that its too alte to save her - her body is too far gone.

For those of you saying it will be a painful death:

Dr. Sean Morrison of Mount Sinai Hospital (search) in New York told FOX News that patients in vegetative states such as Schiavo's do not have painful deaths upon removal of feeding tubes.

"They don't experience hunger or discomfort, so she doesn't suffer," Morrison said. "What happens is, she loses fluids from her body, she enters into a peaceful coma and she passes away very gently."

Yeah, she reacted reflexively. You put a swab in your mouth and it tickles, affecting your muscle movement and coordination. Swabs are physical.

Pain is not physical in nature. The nerves react and stimulate pain receptors, but there is no actual contact that would cause muscle reflex. The only way we will know if she is in pain is for her to tell us, whether through speech or groaning.

I expect those who THOUGHT she couldn't feel pain to step up and acknowledge that she IS feeling pain or morphine wouldn't be administered. Terri Schiavo is dying a painful death and she's showing it else there would be no morphine given.

Ya'll have been proven wrong - you advocated her death, supported her dehydrationg and starvation based on her mind being so vegatative that she knew NOTHING.

and I also read accounts that she was moaning... guess thats just the normal reaction of a piece of meat. As a matter of fact, I bit into a hamburger the other day, and it Mooo'd at me.

Her parents said that if they find out that the morphine in any way hastened her death, they're going to sue everyone involved and try to get murder charges to stick.

Murder??? Oh good grief. You boys are incredibly stupid if you actually believe that. I've not posted on any of these many Terri Schiavo threads, but I'm growing very weary of all the crap spewed about this case.

I'm tired of the media and the pundits and the religious right portraying Michael Schiavo as a murderer or a money-grubber. No one knows his motives. I'm tired of people making this into some dramatic deal about her agony as she starves to death. She's BRAIN DEAD, people! For all intent and purpose, she's already dead. She feels nothing. Datamax, when you quote the morphine bit, you're going by statements from the same attorney who said that Schiavo was trying to communicate to her mother that she wanted to stay alive, which is pretty stupid on her behalf since EVERY doctor ever appointed by the court agrees: She's BRAIN DEAD.

You people act like this is the first time this has ever happened in this country. It has happened thousands of times in the past and it will happen thousands more times in the future. I sincerely hope that none of you are ever placed in a similar situation where you have to make the call as to whether or not to remove the feeding tube of a brain dead family member who has no prospect of recovering. None of us truly know what we would do in that situation, but I suspect many of us would do the same thing Michael Schiavo did. It happens, folks. I know a woman whose husband suffered a heart ailment of some sort and wound up in the same situation several years ago. She made the decision to have his feeding tube removed.

Murder? Good lord, I've heard everything.

More stupidity. What makes her husband "heinous?" You know Michael Schiavo, right? You and he have set over coffee as he told you what his motives and intentions are in this matter, right?

News flash for you bawanajim: When a person is on life support, the spouse is the person who decides whether to leave them on life support or pull the plug. That's how it goes in this country. There have been thousands of unfortunate spouses who have had to make this same decision. They're all heinous too, right?
