Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Too Bad Justice Wasn't On The Jailer's Side

Inmate Said Given Laxative As Prank

Inmate Said Given Laxative As Prank

Thursday, March 10, 2005

(03-10) 16:41 PST Paragould, Ark. (AP) --

A jailer gave a laxative to an inmate who had requested cold medicine, then taunted the man as he suffered severe diarrhea, authorities said.

Johnnie Dallas Pruett, 27, was fired and charged with battery in the March 1 incident involving 19-year-old Darryl R. Bartlett.

Sheriff's Capt. Jamie Martin said that after Bartlett asked for cold medicine, Pruett brought him three pink pills and a cup of water. The inmate took the pills, and Pruett began laughing and showed him a box of over-the-counter laxative pills.

Bartlett said that after an hour and a half, he developed severe stomach pains, vomited and had severe diarrhea. He said Pruett taunted him throughout the night and asked if he needed a diaper.

The inmate was in jail on a failure-to-appear warrant.

I know it's wrong (perhaps even cruel & unusual), but I can't stop myself from laughing.

Wonder if crime would drop were this to become a standard punishment....

Ok ,
color me unimpressed with the jailer's sense of humor , but this is definitely abuse . The inmate requested help legitimately , but was subjected to abuse solely for the sake of humor . I like humor as much as anyone , but this definitely smells .

Sounds out of proportion to pull on a 19 year old jailed on a failure to appear warrant. That's not exactly a hardened criminal. Bet the 19 year old sues and the taxpayers will be on the hook for some bucks.

Although there is a certain "humorous" element to this, it is still wrong and should not have been done.

Bad move on the part of the jail.

Failure to appear for what I wonder?

Anyway, I wonder what some of you would have said if the inmate was in for rape, child molestation, or murder...

I say...you make your bed, then you sleep in it. That goes for the jailer as much as the jailed.

Bench warrants and Body Attachments for FTA are all too common. They are ordered by the judge any time you aren't there for a court appearance--even if it's just traffic tickets. But I digress.

The correctional officer was definitely wrong. He would be terminated and charged criminally in Harford county and probably most other jurisdictions. We have an entire medical staff on duty 24 hours a day where I work and nurses hand out all medications. CO's never touch the meds.

I was wondering about this. Seemed a bit odd that a guard would distribute meds with our litigious society the way it is.

I can see you guys are all serious, and it was a serious matter. I suppose the visual of some grimacing punk behind bars being asked if he needs a diaper was too much too hold back. Generally I just don't really care about criminals or there misfortune. But we must uphold the Constitution, not just for the the spirit of liberty, but for the innocents currently in jail who've not yet been exonerated. The jailer got what he deserved (and maybe less).
