Not to beat a dead horse, and I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it's in the news again, thanks to Greenspan. From what I've been hearing, the consumption tax has worked wonders everywhere it's been tried. Any new insights on it? (We probably don't need to rehash the old thread about it).
My only thoughts are that things are taxed so damn much as it is its a wonder anyone makes any money at all and damn, isn't the Govt bringing in enough money as it is ? Instead of taking in MORE money about using the money you already get more efficiently ? Hell of an idea, it might just work though
I"m all for it! Although the best way would be a per head flat tax. But this is at least a start.
Think about it, if you think you're being taxed too heavily, you just stop buying luxury items and cut back.
The control measures are awesome ! Everyone cuts back, they start loosing revenue -- they KNOW raising the tax is just going to run into another backlash of monumental proportions.
The only down side is that you know they would start making exceptions for tobacco, beer, liquor etc. and the various municipalities would start imposing their own fees.
But at least on a national level it's a good idea, and if locally they go nuts, they're closer for you to throttle than washington DC is.
