All teens have ADD
I couldn't believe it. I was giving a CPR coarse to a bunch of 16 year olds. The coarse I was teaching was the American Heart association, which requires video sessions. The longest video is no more than 10 min.. After each video session, im required to discuse and demonstrate the lesson. After this they practice with the dummies. After three video sessions half the class was griping about having to watch videos. I simple told them, "to be certified, you have to follow the program curriculum". Several of them asked how many more videos they had to watch, so I told them 7 more. (this is a 4 day course, one hour a day). A large group of them got up and left saying this is stupid. These kids were needing this certification for jobs, like baby sitting, life guarding, and restaurant work. I might also add, I was not charging a penny for this course. The next day some of them came back, after they realized they had to take it, asking if they could complete the course, I told them they could next time I decide to offer the course. Needless to say, I have been getting bombarded with angry parent who can not figure out that if I allowed the children to come back after missing an entire session, it would cause the whole class to fall a day behind schedule. Or require me to stay later than need be. Im being a little selfish here, I could stay the extra time, but that would make me get home past midnight. I am voluntarily driving and hour and a half, one way, to this little town to offer this course. Im getting nothing for doing this, simply trying to help these kids out. I don't feel I should put myself out for a bunch of brats. I even had one parent cuss me, calling me every name in the book. I simple told them, Im volunteering for this, and did not force their child to leave. I also told them never to call again because I will not now, nor never teach their child CPR. As far as im concerned, this particular brat can drive a couple of hours a day to do it on his own and pay for it, instead of getting it free from me. Now if the kids had missed a session due to illness or some other uncontrollable reason Id gladly stay, but not for this.[:@][:@][:@][:@]
Thanks for letting me vent, I feel a little better.

Burnie, as a dedicated educator, I know this will be hard for you to accept, but...screw 'em!
You did your part, but you can't make the kids do theirs. Consider your actions an important lesson in personal responsibility for your students.
As I was reading your post, I was thinking about my reply and then I realized that I didn't need to bother because AughtSix had taken the words out of my mouth. Those kids made their beds now they have to lie in them. You wouldn't be doing them any justice by letting them back in. Also, I wouldn't let the child of the parent that cursed you come to any of the classes. Maybe that will teach the parent a lesson also. It's sad that when you volunteer your time like that, you get those things in return. I voluntarily teach community CPR classes as well and I would have reacted the same way that you did.

burniegoeasily - in todays world kids don't have to act responsible, respectful or anything like that. Its all about them, their "rights" and what can be done for them.
