Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default The Black Contract

I was just wondering if any one caught this on C-span over the weekend? They had the conference on for about five and a half hours on Saturday. I watched some of it.

LITHONIA, Ga. -- Black leaders debated Saturday how to develop a checklist of political priorities that could be submitted to politicians seeking support from black voters.
Tavis Smiley, the PBS late-night talk show host, asked about 40 leaders to consider whether a checklist could further the black American political agenda. He initially offered the checklist, or "contract," as a political sword, but others said it would be better used as a self-improvement tool for black Americans.

"The next time you come calling on our vote, you come correct on the contract or you don't come at all," Smiley said at the sixth annual State of the Black Union Symposium, which also included the Rev. Al Sharpton and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

"Black folk have always been the conscience of this country," Smiley said. "We are doing our part to help redeem the soul of America ... When we make black America better, we make all of America better."

There was no consensus on how the contract would be used. More meetings will be held to develop the list, which could include as many as 10 priorities.

Farrakhan said politicians and political parties could not be trusted to fulfill a contract. He said any checklist should be used to mobilize black Americans.

"Power concedes nothing without a demand, but power won't even concede to a demand if it comes from a weak constituency," Farrakhan said.

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, the former president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, suggested any contract be called a covenant. "We've got to recapture that spirituality; that's our strength," Lowery said.

Other panels at the symposium included former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders, Princeton professor Cornel West, former Detroit mayor Dennis Wayne Archer and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

I wonder how long it will take for that bunch of self serving vermin to start stabbing each other in the back without acheiving anything for the black Americans they claim to serve ? Sounds like a lot of wind blowing ...

I wonder how many businesses would be burned down and people killed if there was a call for a "white contract".....

It's kinda along the same thing as the Republicans contract with America.

Basically there telling each party if you want are vote this is what we expect.

Same thing the religious right did with Bush. Now they've told the Republicans if you want our vote again you'de better appoint the right judges and push the right bills.

You know Farakan actually said something very interesting it sort of went like this" the bible is a great way for someone to guide their life. Blacks preachers need to stop entertaining their flock with religion and start teaching religion.

Other things that were discussed were that they have to do something about the fact that 70% of black children are raised in one parent homes. That blacks are killing them selves off .

They do see themselves as being used as a cheap work force in jails. Over 600 products are made in jails. Think about that corporations are using basically slave labor to make products and profit. How is that different then what happens in China?

And they got a backlash of monumental proportions. But we can't backlash on "minorities" -- no, no, no.. thats "nazi" when anyone outside of the special interest group does that.....

Do you see a "BEHAVIOR" driven problem? or is this a "societal" problem.

I didn't breed 'em, why should I feed 'em.

Milwaukee has the 2nd highest teenage prego rate in the country.. guess who?

Last I checked, the old lady cut me off for commenting on her big butt and i've been celibate since - so they can't be mine.

It differnt than China because They commited some tipe of CRIME to get there.

Money from some of the products that they make helps pay for there stay in the jail. which helps tax payers out.

And a very large % of the work inmates do go to other instutions and are not avalible to the public.
IE ACI inmates made sope, brooms, matress, bunks, the agg part farm vegg'e., produced milk, beef and pork.
some other instution made light bulbs and other instual use products.

There work was to make products used at that prision and products to be shiped to other prisions and jails.

If anyone believes there aren't logical reasons for blacks to be suspicious of government and the white majority they are simply ignorant of history. I don't mean antebellum america either. Jim Crow lived in my lifetime and I suspect during the lives of many in this forum. Though the wounds may be healing, they are still fresh. Although I don't agree with many black leaders and I believe some are simply exploiting black fears for their own self-aggrandizement I applaud the attempt to take the bull by the horns if you will. For a group, any group, to organize for political influence is as american as apple pie.
