So...who is it. In honor of President's Day, who are your top 5 Presidents.
1.) Washington- He is the father of our nation. Without a doubt, probably the most influential person in the history of the Unitted States...though he was a bit too federalist for my likings, he was a heck of a man and leader.
2.) Reagan-He is the Washington of the 20th century. Reagan was simple, but knew politics. He knew the world, he knew how to get his way, and he did what was best for the US. He changed the world as we knew it.
3.) Jefferson- Also a main player in the way the US started and is today. His help in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were crucial.
4.) Lincoln- He didn't have much intelligence or looks, perhaps might not have even been one of the greats...but he kept the nation together...or brought it back together. Props to him for that.
5.) George W. Bush- I like him because I believe he is a sincere Christian man who sides with his moral conscience. I don't agree with him on all his policies, especially when it comes to immigration, giving the nat. government more power, and where he spends all of the money, but he's a good Commander in Chief, and I believe, a good role model of character.

They also did a follow up with that poll (and i'm dead serious).
50% of the respondents could not name George Washington as the leader of the Continental Congress.
Our publik skools are doing well.
I heard on the radio one teacher call in and complain that a student's parent wrote a nasty letter trying to correct him in his teachings, she informed him that we did not fight the germans in WWII, we fought the ***anese -- we only fought the Germans in WWI.
It's amazing the stupidnous of the general population. I myself love the study of history--especially WWII. But then again, when I step back and take a longer look at society---with the need for immediate gratification as portrayed in every area of the media--maybe it's not that amazing--just sad--poor bast*rds, don't know what there missing, can't think for themselves, and need to be told what is best for them.--Great time if your in the advertising business

RE: Washington Lags in Polls of Top Presidents
Froman,
No disrespect, but I believe both Reagan and GW do not belong on that list. Look at the deficits both amassed...and GW still has 4 more years...and they are "fiscal conservative Republicans". Yeah, and I'm a redneck hick with an IQ of 10 [&:]...OK, maybe a redneck hick [8D]
As for me, I'll take these 5...
1) Jefferson, Thomas. Constitution, land purchase, slept with a slave...[&:]...need say no more! Although Washington was the first, Jefferson was also one of, if not the, most influential of the Founding Fathers.
2) Roosevelt, Teddy. Can't go against a man whose creed is, "Speak softly and carry a big stick". Also would not have the national forests, the land preserves, or the Park service without his fortitude and vision. Don't forget the Panama Canal either, which opened up vast amounts of trade for both our East & West coasts. If Jefferson wasn't a founding father, Teddy would be first...
3) Roosevelt, Franklin Deleano. Yeah, yeah, I know...he's a democrat that brought us Social Security & the New Deal. But it was a good plan for the short term, which is what he policied and instituted. The coffers after him just couldn't keep their hands dry. Also gave us stability during the Depression, instituted the CCC, and served 4 terms...the best public orator (2nd to Hitler) since Lincoln. Let's face it, with television this man never gets elected to office, let alone the Presidency; a classic overachiever and bona fide go-getter.
4) Jackson, Andrew. Killed a man who slurred his wife, and won at the Battle of New Orleans---the quintessential bada$$. Believed in the power of the Veto, that congressional seats should be revolving (ie, no tenured representatives), and won the popular vote in a very divided country.
5) Wilson, Woodrow. Took us into WWI and won. Enacted the FTC, the Federal Reserve Act, and Federal Income tax (again, like FDR, this was supposed to be short-lived). Probably the most intelligent President in our nation's history...he held a Law Degree, a Doctorate Degree, and was President at Princeton before ascending up the polical chain.

"The first requisite of a good citizen in this republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his own weight." Theodore Roosevelt
1) Franklin D. Roosevelt - Roosevelt was elected an unprecidented four times. He led our nation through the worst financial and foreign affairs disasters in U.S. history. He restored faith in a public that was becoming desparate and destitute through his New Deal legislation. He realized the need to help the Allies before the general population fo the country supported the war effort (Lend-Lease Act). He also created the Soil Erosion Service (now the Natural Resource Conservation Service).
2)Teddy Roosevelt - Founding member of the Boone and Crockett Club, instrumental in creating the National Parks system. Roosevelt was as bold and brave a leader as this country had ever seen, and created a great sense of patriotism and expansionism in the growing nation. He was also probably the most famous "trust buster".
Quote:
Don't forget the Panama Canal either, which opened up vast amounts of trade for both our East & West coasts.
3)Thomas Jefferson - Jefferson, who had been with this country since its inception, helped start America on the road to expansion with the Louisiana Purchase.
4)George Washington - Washington led this country to freedom, and was about the only military leader in history to not try to become a dictator. Instead, Washington turned over the power to the people.
5)James Polk - Polk annexed Texas to the United States, as well as gaining California, New Mexico Territories, and Oregon Territories. In doing so, he knew there would be war with Mexico. Mexico City was taken and the U.S. settled with Mexico for $15 million. Before the war, the U.S. had offered $20 million. The border with Canada was set along the 49th parallel.
Honorable Mention:
Harry Truman
Abraham Lincoln
James Madison
James Monroe
Woodrow Wilson

Thomas Jefferson remains at the top of my list. I must say that it's the content of his ideas, not his presidency, that impresses me most. His principles of liberty and freedom pretty much defined the Declaration of Independence, but his work afterward (both as Virginia Governor and as U.S. President) also set the foundation for the tremendous growth as a nation that we've experienced over the centuries.
Besides making the Louisiana Purchase, he also cut federal spending, cut taxes, and greatly reduced the national debt during his terms. Now that's something you don't see everyday!
