Default Catholic Church Dropping Ball on Child Molesters?

The recent news has said there are something like 1100 additional cases of child molesting done by RCC priests. We have discussed Bishops transferring and/or hiding priests who get caught molesting children. We have also discussed how much the Pope JP II knows about the issue (it's an American problem) and what his papal responsibilities are in this matter. What do you guys think?

Is the church dropping the ball on this seemingly growing problem? Should they stop paying settlement money to victims and/or start turning priests into LE authorities for criminal investigation and prosecution? Are they morally responsible for the thousands of kids being molested by priests? Would you even consider placing any of your kids in a Catholic pariochial school with this current problem?

Is this just a religious issue or should it be a criminal issue first and a religious issue second? Should other priests and Bishops, etc. be required by law to become mandatory reporters of child molesting, etc. just like doctors, nurses, therapists, etc.?

I think that the entire heirarchy of the RC church knew there was a problem and tried to originally save face by covering it up. Many organziations have made that mistake. It seldom works. Instead of just having to face the problem, they now have to face the lies and cover up that they are all responsible for.

I think the RC church dropped the ball on this one. This sort of thing happens when an organization tries to cover up a few isolated incidents instead of confronting them. Pretty soon, the organization is plagued with problems. Had the RC church confronted the problems as they occurred, I don't think they would be having the problems they have today. As far as settling with the victims, I think they should be careful with that. I'm not sure how many cases are legit and how many are people trying to cash in on $$$ settlements. I do think the RC church should turn over what information they have to LE authorities and make available anyone that has been charged with a crime. I would factor in the current problems before I would send a child to a pariochial school, since I don't think the problem has been resolved or the RC church has done much to solve the problem.

I rate child molestation as a criminal issue, not a religious one. I think that ANYBODY who commits such a crime should be punished to the full extent of the law. As far as requiring them to be mandatory reporters, I'm not sure about that one. I would probably say not, because they are not professionals in the same manner as doctors, nurses, or therapists.

I agree with everything Ntexas said. What I don't understand is why this happens? I know preist take a celebacy vow, but is molesting a boy not as servere as breaking celebacy? I really don't understand why this sort of thing happens to begin with unless its is somehow institutionalized. I'm not catholic, but I wonder how those who are can continue to support the church.

I converted a year ago and so I don't think I can defend very well and in the case of the abuse it is indefencible however a lot of people do not have a complete understanding of the problem. Some of the myths :
http://www.stjulie.org/Pedophile.htm...%20Information

The ISt report came out last January.

I was going to cut and paste but if you are interested in church's stance this is a start.

I will say some of the statements I have seen on this board can only be chaulked up to,politely stated as,Ignorant at best.

Because they allowed *****s in their ranks. Homos are virulent pigs, i've been trying to get that point across for god knows how long. They made the HUGE mistake of trusting those deviants to obey and they didn't. And once the pigs not only broke their vows but the law the ball was dropped.

I think the tide is turning, the "problem" isn't getting "worse" -- if you note, the issues that are being brought up now are some 30 year old ones. If anyone thinks that catholics are sitting idley by and watching this happen with total disregard, you're full of it.

But according to some, allowing them to "marry" will stop it -- simpletons.

Denny ,
the link you provided just further illustrates the problem at hand .

It's tone is one of "Why us ? Why are we being singled out ?" , and is typical of the Catholic Church from my experience . I grew up in a Catholic household , my Mother has been a member of the Franciscan Order for well over forty years . I'm not aware that the abuses that are being exposed now have ever happened at my Mom's parish , or even any one out of ten , but the church did most certainly guard and protect those scummy bassturds , and are very culpable in each case .

This is not a new problem within the Catholic Church , nor is it uniquely American , it's been going on for about as long as the church has existed . If you swear a man to lifelong celibacy , which is not a natural state of being , and keep him predominantly in the company of other men then don't be surprised if he changes teams . Prison is living proof of that . Once that line is blurred it's not that great a leap to seeking a more defenseless victim so that you can more easily keep it secret . Denial of one's actions then provides a nice warm blanket to hide in .

Name JUST ONE instance of the RCC whining about being singled out.. JUST ONE.

Bet you can't. IE: you just hate catholics and will make crap up to try and solidify your weak stance. Thats OK, as long as it remains transparent it is nothing other than blather.

I wasn't trying to hide the problem.I think Tard put it into words better than I.But what you seem to be saying is 4% of priests being "pigs" means that the cause is celibacy.I don't think that stands up.However vatican2 has left the door open for change. My position is that it took me a long time to understand or think I understand the church and I still don't don't make the connection. To me it is apples and oranges.I have seen a few priests around a little light on their feet, but then as long as they don't practice or abuse I guess i can live with that.It is not just the Catholic church with this stuff going on.In case you havn't noticed their are alot of "freaks" in society today.
But then Catholics right now are in the shark pool and that really doesn't bother me.In fact it is predicted.
About a week ago I had a non-Catholic pastor, who left the church at my door.He asked me why I made my decision to convert.I told him that one, not the only reason was, that was where the fight is right now.
I'm starting to ramble.Enuff for today.I do understand your take on things.but some of the things I have been reading lately have very little with the abuse. They were motivated by a different position.

SCREW THEM

So how would they know they were homos? Are they all asked up front before schooling? Is it on the application: "Are you a fag? Do you like little boys (sexually speaking)?" They wouldn't know, would they? Are you saying the Catholic church openly appointed priests who were gay? To "trust" them? If I'm reading that correctly, well then yes, the Catholic church is just as responsible as these priests.

First off, the affectations of most homos is pretty apparent. Secondly, a written and verbal condemnation of them being the ranks would be enough to prevent some of them from even trying.

The issue was based on trust, the trust was broken and it was broken in a very big way. The wheels are turning internally and this is getting nipped pretty quick. Unfortunately alot of damage was done already that will be damn near impossible to rectify -- but on a postive note, it has been a firing point for many very conservative catholics to stand up and "grab the bat" to start cleaning house.
