RE: West Coast: Finding new was to tax the heck out of you!
This tax could get real ugly.
Because the cost for business vehicles would get passed onto the consumer, this would be inflationary; the result would be an "averaging" caused by passing the tax from business to the consumers. In other words, you'd pay this tax more than once per mile.

VC I guess you lost me on this one "Because the cost for business vehicles would get passed onto the consumer, this would be inflationary; the result would be an "averaging" caused by passing the tax from business to the consumers. "
I thought that is the way it has always worked? Trucking companys get taxed (fuel and permits), they pass the cost of paying the tax onto the consumer.
Thanks

And you are right. But this new tax will presumably be paid by businesses in addition to private passenger vehicles. Thus the owner of the private passenger vehicle will pay the new mileage tax and then pay higher costs for all goods and services. The cost of the tax to business won't affect them to any degree, only the end consumer of goods and services, so the business cost will be "averaged out", meaning levied upon the consumers.

maybe the light just came on.
Will the proposed tax be deducted or not deducted as a business expense differently than what has been done in the past?
Thanks
Mr-Pirk
Mr-Pirk, as with all other taxes levied against businesses, the businesses will simply raise the price of their goods and we, the consumers, will ultimately pay this new tax. Depending on how many vehicles you own and how many miles you drive, you will certainly be paying the tax twice over (yours and businesses) and possibly more than that. You won't see the business tax on any of your purchase receipts but you will definitely see it in higher prices for your groceries, gasoline, household goods and practically every single you buy which is shipped and/or transported by trucks. Using this trucking tax miles analogy, you would be paying this new tax whether you drove a vehicle or not.
The other issue that comes up is the GPS proposal which is just more big brother in action. No thanks.

If California's tax payers would quit issuing State Bonds to pay for private interests they wouldn't need so much money. How many billion for stem cell research? When the researchers find the cure for diabeatis will it be free? No, but the tax payer will have paid for it. Then the patient will pay again.
