SOCIALSECURITY:
(This is worth reading. It is short and to the point)
Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during election years.
Our Senators and Congresswomen do not pay into Social Security and, ofcourse, they do not collect from it.
You see, Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of their rare elevation insociety. They felt they should have a special plan for themselves. So, many years agothey voted in their
own benefit plan .
Inmore recent years, no congressperson has felt the need to change it. After all,it is a great plan.
For all practical purposes their plan works like this:
When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die.
Except it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments..
This is calculated on an average life span for each of those twoDignitaries For example, Senator Byrd and CongressmanWhite and their wives may expect to draw $7,800,000.00 (that's Seven Million, Eight-HundredThousand Dollars), with their wives drawing $275,000.00 during the last yearsof their lives.
YoungerDignitaries who retireat an early age, will receive much more during the rest of their lives.
Theircost for this excellent plan is $0.00. NADA...ZILCH...
This little perk they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick upthe tab for this plan. The funds for this fine retirement plan comedirectly from the General Funds;
"OURTAX DOLLARS AT WORK"!
From our own Social Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid)into,-every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our employer)-we can expect to get an average of $1,000 per month after retirement.
Or, in other words, we would have to collect our average of $1,000monthly benefits for 68 years and one (1) month to equal Senator Bill Bradley'sbenefits!
Social Security could be very good if onlyone small change were made.
That change would be to:
Jerk theGolden Fleece Retirement Plan from under the Senators and Congressmen. Put theminto the Social Security plan with the rest of us .
thensit back.....
andwatch how fast they would fix it.

I've been saying this for years Pat !
Is there any current legislation pending to rescind this and their voted in right to vote in a pay raise ? That's a petition that I think everyone could get behind . Does anyone here have any experience with creating such a petition ? Lend us your expertise . Who knows ? With a lot of work and a little luck we could help to kill off the Golden Fleece . We don't want to violate any laws either , could any of the attorneys who post here offer some advice ? Advice from Poly/Sci majors would also be very welcome . Who else here deals with matters like this ? Pardon me for trying to start a town meeting here , but I'm starting to get fired up !
All of us suffer because of the way things are set up , and now they're telling us that yet another tax increase is needed . The time is now , and the cause is just . That's all I've got to say . Can anyone improve upon this post ?
C'mon ! Feed the kitty !

I also didn't know something else about Social Security until the other day. For all of these years, nobody paid into social security after $90,000! In other words.......after paying social security on $90,000 anything they made over $90,000 they did not have to pay into S.S.
I suggest you check snopes. This is an urban legend. - the Congress retirement part that is anyway.
As for the "cap" that is true. Bill Gates and I pay the same amount of SS taxes. Bush could do A LOT to increase the solvency of SS by just increasing the cap.
Hears something about this in the radio the other day--I'm not sure, so correct me if I'm wrong (yeah, like that had to be said!), but the $90,000 cap works both ways. They don't recieve any more SS either, so if they paid in past 90 grand they would just be supporting others. That isn't the way SS is supposed to work--ideally, we are supposed to get back what we pay in. I don't think anyone should be punished or penalized for being successful.

You are correct LBR, the benefit cutoff is calculated at $90K.
However, I believe your point is fallcious because our tax system is indeed a gradient where those who "can" pay more are suppossed to pay more.
Now, the current cap was set back in 1983 by Allen Greenspan and has increased a little each year upto $90K (inflationary increases, etc.) In 1983, when this was set, the "cap" covered over 90% of all wage earners, in other words, only 10% of the population exceeded the cap.
Today, over 20% of the population exceeds the cap, hence it probably needs to be adjusted as it has not kept up with wage growth accurately.
That isn't the way SS is supposed to work--ideally, we are supposed to get back what we pay in.
Actually that was NEVER the intent. It was always determined that the majority of people would die or draw very little of what they put into the system.
Or we could do the socialistic thing and raise that 90k bar a bit higher and then not allow the most wealthy to ever collect anything - they don't need it right?
This is off the subject of the initial post. So, I ask, who was it that said the fall of a democracy would come when those in charge realize they can give themselves raises etc. etc. - I don't remember the wording either. What's good for the goose ain't good for us ganders.

I don't claim to understand it all, but I don't see why it matters what the cap is if it's directly linked to the payout. Pay in more, get back more. Of course if those who pay in more die early they would be supporting the system; but on the other hand if they live longer than average they may draw a lot more out of it. Doubt it will survive many more years unless it's fixed anyhow.

I would like to think that we could change it, but I really don't see it happening. You're fighting city hall!
