Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Act of Treason????

Ok she is facing 20 years but isn't this ab act of treason that should be punishable by death??

A veteran civil rights lawyer known for representing radicals and revolutionaries in her 30 years on the New York legal scene has vowed to fight her conviction for smuggling messages of violence from one of her jailed clients to his terrorist disciples.

Lynne Stewart, 65, a firebrand, left-wing activist, was convicted Thursday of conspiracy, providing material support to terrorists, defrauding the government and making false statements.

"It's a dark day for civil liberties and for civil liberties lawyers in this country," attorney Ron Kuby said Thursday. "In the post 9-11 era, where dissidents are treated as traitors, it's perhaps no surprise that a zealous civil rights lawyer becomes a convict."

Kuby, who briefly represented Omar Abdel-Rahman (search) after the radical Egyptian sheik's 1993 arrest, said the verdict was a "terrible message to send at a time when we need civil rights lawyers more than ever."

A tearful Stewart insisted she did nothing wrong after taking over Abdel-Rahman's case and representing him until her arrest in 2002. The blind cleric was convicted in 1995 of plotting to blow up New York landmarks and assassinate Egypt's president.

"I hope this is a wake up call to all the citizens of this country," she said outside court. "You can't lock up the lawyers."

If this is her attitude, then it explains her demented behavior.

Oh, yes you can. Sorry Ms. Stewart, but sending terror messages doesn't qualify you for immunity. As a defense attorney, you never really had much to begin with. I'm sure you'll enjoy prison.

Lynne Stewart,
I"ve read a bit about her in the past. She makes the ACLU look like a bunch of Scalia clones.

She openly defied the courts instructions which resulted in the deaths of many people.
Twenty years working in the prison laundry will do her some good. Then send he to Israel so they can have what is left. If I recall the victims were mostly Jews.

Kevin is right -- Shakespeare is the one who wrote in one of his plays "First let's kill all the lawyers!" I just don't know which play, Richard III?

I think her punishment ought to be to restrict her law practice to ONLY defending, and defending with zeal and intellectual committment, the civil right guaranteed by the second amendment -- the right to keep and bear arms. I somehow think she doesn't feel this is a civil right that needs protecting! I never got this about the ACLU -- the ACLU-Except-The-Second-Civil-Liberty is more like it.

20 years or the death sentence are not much different, in this 65 year old woman's case. Note that the mere conviction for a felony offense probably results in her being disbarred for life and hence stops her acting as a lawyer.

This woman should be a poster child for liberals. It is one thing to provide a vigorous defense for any accused person, whatever the crime. It is another thing entirely to be the mouthpiece for a convicted terrorist. This woman is an enemy of the people. She has betrayed her nation.

I think she is guilty of treason but I'm not sure about the death penalty for her.

You ever get a look at that broad? I think giving her the death penalty would be solid proof of the "broken window theory" ... he he
