Obviously this doesn't apply to combat vets, but to lay people and cops.
How many of you have ever been shot at? Were you the intended victim?
I've been shot at 3X in my life, 2X were strays during gang crap while I was a bartender, the other was an intentional shot while fleeing an crime scene that I had no initial knowledge of (see story in "changing my religion" )
How is that possible? I have never been a violent person and am not ashamed to run like a scared girl scout when confronted, but over the course of years I don't know how many times I was confronted and cornered -- many times for actually standing up for what was right.
Never been shot at. I've had a crackhead try to start a fight with me at Allsups. He came up to me, started mouthing something. None of his sentences made much sense. Then he got a deer in the headlight look and took off. I stared at him until he went away. I've also had somebody beg for money at a Whataburger, then start approaching me in a threatening manner. I think he had some sort of knife. Apparently the threatening look works, cause he fled, too. I've never had to even say anything.

When I was young, we were dove hunting in our usual field, and some deer hunters didn't like the fact that our shooting messed up their dog drives- so I had a 22 bullet cut a limb over my head. Unfortunately for them- the same guy who owned the dove field owned the deer land and was sitting next to me- NO MORE DEER HUNTERS ON THAT LAND.
I also have had two knived pulled on me while I was a security guard. I talked one down, the other made the mistake of being within swinging distance at the time ( I was in college and beched 450- BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Just never been in a situation where a fight was possible. Not even as a kid. I went to a small school -- 50 kids in my class, and we were all friends. Always got along with my cousins. Just never got in that situation!
I took Karate, and got to spar a lot. Wrestled with friends as a kid, but not with anger.
I've been hit with shot while bird hunting a few times and had a brother shoot near me once (he never did that again) but I have never been shot at in 14 years as a cop. I've had my duty pistol, shotgun or trunk rifle out hundreds of times but have always had the upper hand and good tactical position to where it simply wasn't worth it to the bad guys. I've been threatened with knives and sticks while on-duty but have always prevailed when I pointed out how foolish it was to bring those weapons to a gunfight. I've got at least 7 more years to go and hope I'm not put in a situation where I'll have to shoot somebody. And for those of you who like to say you'll never know what you'll do until it happens, I'd point out that you should have already made that decision BEFORE you pack a gun.
