WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush is getting ready to ask Congress
for an additional $80 billion for conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan,
as budget analysts prepare new estimates of the federal deficits that
would have loomed even without the wars.

That all depends on if and when the troops for the most part are out of those countries.
Americans have short memories and live in the moment. Just ask some one what the issues of the 2000 election were and they won't be able to tell you. Granted 9/11 refocused our attention. But what is there to indicate that there will not be another issue or event either related or unrelated to terror that will banner the days ahead.
I believe that domestic issues will be the focus for 2008. The party with the most acceptable (believable) solutions to SS ,our health and economic matter will carry the vote.

I only wish you were right. Bush and Co will duck the SS issue and the health care issue as well as all politicians before them have. The economy is essentially beyond their control although the deficit is a fine way of trying to steer it into the ditch.

More specifically, I think it depends on whether or not we succeed in our missions there.

Pretty accurate.

All financial matters have a breaking point. It may be more than just a matter of success or failure, which may prove to be hard to quantify in those God-forsaken places. I do hope you are right.

Maybe there are creative ways to pay for the deficit but they won't happen. Washington insiders go with the status quo and what works (= tax increase to pay off debt).
Funny thing is, the defecit has ben cut by 8 Billion dollars in the first quarter of fiscal 2005. This due apparently to the tax cuts introduced by Bush and the subsequent investment by business. Of course the main stream media didn't mention it so therfore it didn't happen, right??

Right Coastie. Dead on. The whole money thing depends as others have said on how we come out of the wars. If we have a real win, the public will be happy and the money won't matter at all. Billions are not real money any more anyway. Its a matter of paper shuffleing and log book entries. As long as the american people are productive we can cover the debt.

1) Recession; when the gov. finally stops the excessive spending and the huge flow of public cash into the economy stops - cutbacks, layoffs, etc.
2) Defacto tax increase - someone will have to foot the bill and raise taxes. Maybe there are creative ways to pay for the deficit but they won't happen. Washington insiders go with the status quo and what works (= tax increase to pay off debt).
#2 Is a financial imposibility without huge amounts of public backlash -- and it's unnecessary.
#1) is almost correct. Remember, we are living off of Fiat money (thanks to the turd richard nixon).
We will see a period of hyperinflation not unlike that seen in europe. There was a reason that during and Post WWII (prior to the Euro) that countries like Germany had some of the most stable economies on earth.
