Twenty-three terror suspects tried to hang or strangle themselves at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay during a mass protest in 2003, the military confirmed Monday.

The incidents came during the same year the camp suffered a rash of suicide attempts after Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller took command of the prison with a mandate to get more information from prisoners accused of links to al-Qaida or the ousted Afghan Taliban regime that sheltered it.


Between Aug. 18 and Aug. 26, the 23 detainees tried to hang or strangle themselves with pieces of clothing and other items in their cells, demonstrating "self-injurious behavior," the U.S. Southern Command in Miami said in a statement. Ten detainees made a mass attempt on Aug. 22 alone.

Guantanamo officials classified two of the incidents as attempted suicides and informed reporters. But they but did not previously release information about the mass hangings and stranglings during that period.

My guess is that it was a deadly PR stunt to make the "torture" allegations look really bad. This then would turn more away from the war in Iraq.

What do you expect from people who wear diapers on their heads, think God wants them to kill innocent people and that such murders will get them the services of 72 virgins if they are killed while murdering innocents?

If they really wanted to have some fun with them, they should have swim call in the bay between the base and Cuba. Nice collection of sharks in there attracted, from what I was told, by the meat processing plant upstream on the river that empties into the bay. Attach a hook and line and do a little fishing with live bait!!!!!!!

Uh, I think the most likely reason they didn't stop them was because it would put interogators out of a job. Kind of difficult to extract information from a corpse.

And yes, if the press had the full details of this incident, it wouldn't been blown all out of proportion by the news media.

I don't think these suicide attempts had anything to do with the Major, although if they did, I'd say kudo's to that Major - give him a medal.
