Coastie, I don't agree at all.

If the crime was serious enough to demand the taxpayers spend so much on her prosecution, then the sentence should be comensurate.

It is the prosecuter that decides how far they will go to put a person behind bars. The defendent has a right to defend themselves and if proving that defense wrong cost the taxpayers more money the defendent should go to jail longer?
Sometimes as I believe in this case the prosecuter was sending a message at taxpayer expense. Actually rather stupid when you look at what little they were able to prove. I think she is guilty but it is not the defendents fault it cost so much to prove it.
Sometimes cases are slam dunks and other time they cost a fortune to prove. That should not be the critirea to pursue them or not. That is how the plea bargin system got started. To save time and money. It also allows for more time to pursue more important cases but it is all about judgement calls from prosecuters.
Uniform sentencing guidlines are the biggest step for jail time. Also keeping cost of prison service down in anyway possible. No luxuries, only necessary health care and more cells.
