RE: 63 years ago today
Anna and I have been talking about it for a couple of weeks.
We have been to Ford Island, visited the AZ, toured the Battleship Missouri now on display there, the submarine, AZ and Pearal Harbor museums. All very quiet places even when they are crowded.
If you ever go to HA, in the main airport there is a museum in the terminal that is well worth the few dollars they charge to tour it. Many original photos, documents and recordings.
If you had the chance, Col. Oliver North has a show on FoxNC on Saturday evenings 7PM CST called War Stories. This past Saturday it was about the mini subs that the ***s used or attempted to use in the attack on Peral Harbor.
The First shot fired at Pearl Harbor was a single round from a US Navy vessel which hit the tower of a mini sub and immediately sank it. It sank so fast they could not confirm the kill. It happened before the air attack started.
They found the sub a couple of years ago in about 1600 ft of water right where the ships log said it sank and sure enough there was one 4 inch hole in the Cunning (sp) Tower. The first kill of the war with ***an finally confirmed after 60 odd years.
The first *** prisoner was a mini sub commander (LT) who's sub ran a ground on a coral reef in HA. He was taken prisoner by about 8AM that morning when he came a shore. The sub toured the US in a War Bonds promotion and is now on display I think in NJ.
Days such as this should never be forgotten. They are reminders of what has happened and as what we are all so well aware of, will happen agian if we let our guard down.
