By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor--and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be--That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions--to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.
Go: Washington
Clearly, Thanksgiving should be abolished, and the Father of Our Country should be posthumously impeached for such a flagrant violation of the First Amendment...NOT. BTW, you didn't think this was George Bush, did you?

It should be pointed out that George Washington was not a Christian. He was a Mason who believed in an "Almighty", but men such as himself, Jefferson, and Franklin all refuted the Blood of Jesus Christ as being able to sanctify their transgressions. In short, they did not profess Jesus Christ as Lord.
Second, it is NOT the duty of any worldly nation to recognize the Lord God. God only recognizes One Nation, and it is not America, England, China, or Russia, but rather the Nation He calls Holy, and that Nation is The Church, better known as those who believe that Jesus Christ is Lord.
In order for their to be a true desire to Thank The Lord, one must believe in Him. Thanksgiving cannot be mandated to a certain day. To the Christian every meal, and every day signifies thanksgiving. Everyday is a sabbath, and everyday is blessed as the next.
The point is that our founders did not recognize a separation of church and state, as the lib's profess they did. They point to who, Jefferson for using the phrase separation of church and state? This phrase appears in no legal document, and it is my belief that Jefferson chose the word "church" in reference to an organized body seeking to be the official church of the land, such as in England.
Acknowledging the existance of the Creator is what they did. Not specifying which religion to use in that acknowledgement is their observance of religious freedom.
Libs want God out of the picture -- period, and they falsely use hidstory to bolster their argument.

Our "founders" did not even recognize the Church. The "Church" is the Body of Jesus Christ. How could they recognize it, when they refuted it? Jefferson especially. He rewrote the Holy Bible removing all inferences to the Blood of Christ being needed to sanctify sins.
Granted, the "founders" were in favor of freedom to worship everything from Allah, to Zen-master, but let us not confuse them with the Body of Christ.
Shrewman Capote, I agree almost 100% with this line of your except, I do not believe it is or should be limited to Christians. I believe it applies to all men regardless of the God in which they profess their belief

( Below in part from a Washington Post article today)
Long before George Washington, a private company , the Berkeley Co. had financed a mission to the New World. Upon wading ashore in what is now Virginia, Capt John Woodlief opened the company orders which stated
," Wee ordaine that the Day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned for the planation in the land Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God"
This was in 1619, over 100 years before George Washington.
Now I agree that GW never intended the a separation of Church and state. Yes, GW was a Mason as were most Presidents and signers of the Constitution. They all professed a belief in a deity. I have always understood it that the government shall not endorse or establish a specific religion.

logs, in order to be able to live in the sabbath rest of Christ Jesus, and in order to be able to give thanks to Him you must be His Child. There are no other gods, but Him. He is God. You see, those outside of God will babble on about the things that they are thankful for. Those inside of God simply thank God, because He is the only thing they need to be thankful for.

You can twist the words in anyway you wish, but it does not alter the fact that the "Establishment clause" of the first ammendment, as read by generations of people and as interpreted by many yet today merely means that the government will not establish a church that would be the official church of the United States. Symantics has become nearly a national sport lately, instead of reading anything based soley upon the words, as written, everybody tries to put their own meaning to them. You do religion a major diservice when you begin to argue as to just what the "Church" is in the context as described in your quote. I would imagine, you would be delighted had the founders declared a particular sect to be the "official church" of the U.S. especially if it happened to be the one to which you attach a significant interest. I'm sorry but I cannot buy into that. Generations of my family have fought and died to protect this nation and the principles upon which it is based, relatives long since departed, including those from the Mayflower, fled a nation which specified a national religion and could not abide by that intrusion into their lives. One was actually burned at the stake for refusing to convert to the religion (Church) du jour, in merry old england. I wiil not ignore those sacreifices to make you feel good about your religious beliefs. I will, however, fight to the death to insure that you have the right to worship in any way you choose. That is what it is really all about.

Coastie, I do not think you and I are even in the same book wrt this issue. My comments have nothing to do with religous freedom, or how it is defined in US law.
My comments are simply pointing out that I believe the vast majority of the "founder fathers" did not believe that Jesus Christ was the way, truth, and life, and that His Blood cleansed them.
As for you "fighting to the death" for me. Save your energy friend. My freedom, and my desire to exhalt Jesus as Lord has nothing to do with anything you do, say, or think. I already had a Man die for me. His Blood is all I need.
