Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default i have a question concerning gun rights

being relatively new here, i admit that i am not well versed in all aspects of gun ownership.

here's my question...

a big deal is made on background checks in reference to weapons purchasing...is it a requirement for all firearms? or only for handguns?

and if it is not a requirement for all firearms, do you think it should be? any reasons you might give are appreciated.

my opinion (and remember, i am only going on what info i have) is that background checks would be good. it would help keep guns out of the hands of people with a violent criminal past.

A NICS check is required for all firearms purchases nationwide, EVEN AT A GUN SHOW (the gun show "loophole" is a myth fabricated by anti-gun forces to villify gun shows and the dealers/buyers that participate in them to garner support from the uninformed masses). The exceptions are for for CCW/perchase permit holders who have already met even stricter background check requirements for that permit. The only other exception is the private transfer of a firearm (not involving a BATFe licensed dealer, and generally only for long guns). Iowa requires that to purchase a handgun one MUST have a perchase permit, and if you sell somebody a handgun who doesn't have a permit, they can prosecute the seller. Other states are generally similar in this regard.

Except that these requirements already exist, yet gun violence persists, indicating that the criminals DON'T buy their guns from lawful sources as a rule, yet they get them. There is a well established criminal black market for illegally imported and stolen guns, for which legally mandated background checks do not apply. The problem with anti-gun logic when it comes to legislative efforts is that "senseable" laws are seldom "senseable" or practical. Laws do not regulate the unlawful. Criminals are no more likely to comply with laws that prohibit their acquisition or possession of a gun any more than they comply with the laws that say they can't use violence to get what they want. These laws control only those who respect and abide by them, not those who display open contempt for the law. What the law should do is what is already DOES do, if judges and prosecutors would simply put the law to work, is provide for a means to PUNISH those who misuse guns to commit crime. We must control the criminals, not the guns. This is a concept that the leftists antis can't get through their head. We live in a free society, and as a result of that freedom we will ALWAYS have those among us who choose to abuse their freedom and impose themselves on others by unlawful means. Liberals seem to prefer controlling freedom rather than controlling those who abuse it.

Mike nailed it! And this is a classic quote that is so darn true.
Liberals seem to prefer controlling freedom rather than controlling those who abuse it.
Glen, dperry and 006 took the words right out of my mouth.

absolutely not.

as i said, i did not know...and i thought the easiest way to find out was to ask.

you guys are paranoid.

i might not agree with all your political views, but i hardly think i've trolled anywhere in this forum. i've discussed the topics and made my views known, but always respectfully and without ill will.

OK now go away. If you were a hunter of any sort you would already know the answer to your question.
