Default a quart of oil ..............

5 quarts of oil for my car still costs about what it did 2/3 years ago. Wal-Mart oil changes are still like $15.99 right ?

So gasoline prices double ........ but a quart of oil stays the same ? Crude goes from $11 a barrel in 1999 to $55 a barrel in 2004 ........... and a quart of oil stays about the same ?

Something doesn't add up here ................

Stealthycat ,
the answer toyour question is that they are charging ever more for their single most profitable end product , gasoline . Motor oil is a steady buck , but it's much harder to gouge the public with .

During the Fifties gasoline was a much less complex product and constituted only about 17% of a 52 gallon barrel . By the Seventies , however , the increasingly complex blends that gasoline had become now took up 35% of that same barrel due to the rising comsumption of the product and the companies attempts to water down the product . The product was diluted partly to meet EPA emissions requirements , but mostly to reduce it's cost of production while simultaneously increasing the volume of end product to sell .

There isn't as much daily demand for motor oil as there is for deisel or gasoline. There is only a limited amount of refinery capacity in our country, and they are churning out fuel as fast as they can, with built in extra costs of "boutique blends" that also take up refinery time along with probably overtime costs to keep up with demand. The winter season is coming up also, and alot of the east coast homes use antiquated fuel oil furnaces which also use up alot of oil and refinery time.

Solutions to the problem:
A. get rid of boutique blends of gasoline
B. build more refineries
C. get rid of cars & oil burning furnaces

A&B are the only practical solutions, but the same people who are thwarting these from happening take great glee in higher gasoline prices. They also have the advantage of their armchair environmentalist soundbite influence on the rest of tjhe masses of asses.

lol
Yes much like peta& the antigunners/enviro mental elitists- they think they have nothing to lose on there side- but then again they cant see much beyond there own fat heads.

The bulk of motor oil can be reused over& over again if they wished to, it never wears out( just gets dirty& the additives depleated)

Much like the quality drinking water in everyones toylets- once very clean- now has to be heavly prossessed to make it so again.(or good enough to dump in the rivers anyways)
Maybe some ppl drink out of there toylets & im just not well informed on such habbits.

walmart dosnt change oil or have a car shop here[&o]
Thats a good price tho(can you get any brand oil you want?) -& yep motor oil hasnt gone up much.

But dont give them any ideas they will dble the price!

But still its avarage? somewhere around $1.00 a quart 4 dollars a gallon & i dont thnk they have to refine it much like they do gasoline( yep esp the new improved? types of gas now) , its all those additives & commericals & those stickers on race cars?

Yep as someone mentioned on the gas thread they have made gasoline/fuel/petro out of coal in the past/ im sure they could improve on it now a bit[&:] & we all could all run stills/distillers& make some/of our own fuel
But i wonder how much oil to make a gallon of gas reg or super/hitest/ethel?? whats tthe ratio- 35%? what? Thats a 52 gallon drum?

I dont lika dis math[&:]

Cubits&hecters& liters&kelos&stones(how big are the stones suppose to be?-various type rocks/stone will differ in weight to volume...
imperial pints are nice

Stealthy, i think the reason for that is that a lot of motor oil is pumped here. I believe domestic crude from certain areas makes a better motor oil.

I want to know why in the he#$ diesel is the same price or higher than premium unleaded gasoline right now. There is not near the amount of refining required to produce diesel, but I bought some today and had to pay $2.11 per gallon. [:@]

THAT"S FREAKIN RIDICULOUS!

I think it is in the $1.85 range here, or was recently.

It seems like this whole support corn farmers low emissions save the world and the environment biodiesel stuff would start hitting the market sometime. I thought that it was supposed to be price competitive at $1.75, but I don't notice anyone advertising it anywhere. I guess they are still trying to work some of the bugs out.

Doesn't make me any difference though. I drive an old chevy pickup, a.k.a. The Rebel, that has a gas engine. But one of these days maybe I'll be able to afford one of those fancy diesel pickups. Then I can haul my cattle in style and the other ranchers won't make fun of me.

I think that a recent short term spike in gas was due to hurricane damage. Here in Ohio, gas just dropped from $2.05 per gal to $1.85.

Not sure of the disparity between gas and motor oil prices though.
