Default Obesiety fighting surgery.

This ones for Stealthycat. My wife underwent surgery last Friday, the 24th of Sept. She opted for "banding", a relatively new technique and less risky than "gastric Y". For her it was a matter of not being able to sustain a diet through changing eating habits and exercise. She suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure. She also suffers from sleepnathia(sp).....a condition which does not allow enough oxygen into the system during sleep and often wakes the person up during bedtime. During her surgery, the doctor said it was tougher than normal with her because in his words...her liver was full of sugar.[]

I have to report that exactly a week after her surgery, she has lost 13 lbs. and at least her glucophage pill has been cut in half. She returned to work 4 days later with a restricted weight limit of what she can lift(10 lbs.) for 2 weeks. She is feeling more energetic already......and not a bit hungry! She is on a liquid diet for 2 weeks.[:-] Within 3 months if she starts feeling hungry more than normal, the elastic band can be adjusted at the center without undergoing additional surgery. In the future her meals will consist of approximately only 4 ozs. each. Down the road, she will need to work out to firm up, but thats a good idea anyway! Its also very common that diabetics of her type need no longer take any medication and many times high BP meds are not necessary as well.

I honestly can say that having this surgery saved her life, made her start feeling better already, and she is losing weight while maintaining her strength. Our family doctor recommended this bariatric center and our health insurance ok'd the procedure after they received a report.

For those who have a family member or know of someone who needs to lose a lot of weight, and suffers from health problems....I suggest that a good, well known bariactic center may be able to help. Like any medical center for any type of health problems, questions should be asked and the history of those doctors should be thoroughly checked out. Fortunately, she knows several people who went there and all who were treated or had surgery are doing very well.

CM, I'm happy that your wife is doing well after the surgery and that the prognosis is as good as it is. There are many people that could probably benefit from it and live healthier and happier lives afterwards. A friend of mine had the older method done several years ago after a lifetime of obeisity and it has turned his life around. Good luck to your wife and you in the future.

You knew I'd be drawn to this like a bug to a zapper, didn't you ?

IF your wife ate properly, and IF she exercised properly and IF she did all those things and still had huge weight issues ......... then surgery was a valid option.

IF she didn't eat well, IF she didn't exercise properly, she used surgery for the wrong reasons and it'll come back to bite her IMO. Often it seems the people who have issues with watching their diets and exercising before a surgery like this will have the same problems later.

Rapid weight loss is hard on the body Cougar. The body doesn't like it - but your doctors should know all about that.

In todays world its much easier to take a pill or have a surgery than to eat right and work out - I hope your wife hasn't taken the easy road because rarely does easy result in what people are looking for in life.

Good luck

I'd have to say congratulations to your wife for taking what can be seen as a risky step towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. I'm glad to hear that her health is improving, and, frankly, whether she did it because it was the only option or whether she did it because it was the "easy way," that's none of Stealthycat's or anyone else's damn business.

BenGarrett - Cougar posted it on a public forum and kinda addressed it to me. "Damn business" ?? Cougar I doubt will consider my opinions one way or the other, its just discussion on a topic that is close ot him right now.

The last thing the human body needs is drugs and surgery. My Aunt was a diabetic. She was pathetic at her eating habits. She smoked. She KNEW what she had to do and didn't do it. She used medication to live to a ripe old age of 45 years. Without medication, she'd have died in her 30's or earlier.

Thing is ........ had she been strict with her dieting, not smoked and exercised ie lived a healthy life, she'd be alive today with a high quality life.

Thats one of but tens of thousands of similar people and the way they live []

That's just awsome cougar, I hope this goes well. People like Stealthcat don't have a clue what people like your wife go through. For some people, the decisions about eating have to be made at a very early age. Once the the sugar and carbo resistance builds in a person, it's just about impossible to control. I hope your wife is able to lose all the weight she wants and can lead a good and healthy wife. Good luck to the both of you.

I truely hope CougarMags wife is able to benefit from this operation and get her life on track. Further I don't know how she got so far off track that she needs this surgery nor why she can not control her eating habits. I don't care unless I have to share three across seating on an airplane with her or some other thing where her poor habits start to effect me.
That being said, CougarMag address this thread to S-Cat and either wanted him to comment or thought he might not because it would draw the ire of the overly sensitive people who just want to be nice. Being nice is polite but in some cases is just the easy way out. Friends know when to be nice and when to speak the truth.

The situation as I see it is if people would just be honest with each other and tell them,You're getting too fat. Do something about it. It is effecting your life and in some case others lives, the health insurance industry> It is in most cases something you can control. You have to focus on it, practice self discipline and educate yourself on how to live healthy.

Now once agian if this is the only way for someone to get back to even or as close to it as possible, have at it, pay for it as elective surgery and do something to correct your poor eating habits.
I wish CMs wife all the luck in the world on this and hope to heck she corrects her life style in the future.
