I cannot begin to express my disappointment in your decision to let the Assault Weapons Ban expire yesterday.
Four years ago you said you supported renewal of the assault weapons ban, though you made it clear that you were generally opposed to reasonable gun violence prevention laws. I was very happy to hear you say it then, because it was a sensible position, and one long supported by such conservative leaders as Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater. As a lifelong Republican, it gave me hope that my party would move away from a knee-jerk tendency to oppose whatever the gun lobby said Republicans should oppose.
Now, these guns, designed by military scientists to inflict the maximum level of damage to human beings, are back on our streets.
You have broken your promise to the American people and you should be ashamed. Jim and I loved Ronald Reagan, and one of the main reasons we loved him was that he was always, always, true to his word.
This law worked, and it saved lives. It saved the lives of police officers and children. You cast your support aside for a political endorsement. We all pay prices in life for our actions. I hope the American people will make you pay a price for this decision.
In your current campaign, you are pledging to keep America safe. But your conscious decision to let this ban expire has placed us all in jeopardy.
The expiration of this law is temporary. It will be renewed: It is only a matter of how long it will take to renew it. There is still time for you to show leadership, do the right thing, and restore this law. But know that Jim and I will continue our efforts to restore the ban, with or without your help. And we will succeed. Lives are hanging in the balance.
Mr. President, step forward and do the right thing.
Sincerely,
And it was signed "sarah brady".

I think it is difficult to prove that this law has saved the lives of police officers, children or anybody else for that matter. Although I do sympathize with Sarah and her husband over her husband's shooting injury and continuing debilitation, I think they would have been far more effective in pushing for increased help and care facilities for mentally ill people and would have had a much greater and more favorable impact upon society. I can't remember exactly how Reagan is involved in this but I remember there was something. I think she is dreaming if she truly believes this law will be reinstated.

You can't sign what doesn't make it to your desk ...

Reagan and Goldwater were both NRA members . Neither supported gun control .
Now, these guns, designed by military scientists to inflict the maximum level of damage to human beings, are back on our streets.
They never left , ever heard the term "pre-ban" ?
You have broken your promise to the American people and you should be ashamed. Jim and I loved Ronald Reagan, and one of the main reasons we loved him was that he was always, always, true to his word.
Bush broke no promise , the ban never got to his desk .

There is no proof that the ban saved lives , all of the banned weapons were available the whole time .
In your current campaign, you are pledging to keep America safe. But your conscious decision to let this ban expire has placed us all in jeopardy.
Another groundless accusation .

All laws are temporary , they can change with the stroke of a pen , but only when enough people want them changed .
Mr. President, step forward and do the right thing.

It seems funny to me that Sarah Brady never gave 2 schitts about banning guns until her husband got shot . Prior to that she had no opinion about them .

RE: Letter from sarah brady to the President
The A.G.B. is a piece of garbage. It leads to way too much scrutiny. If it was more precise, people could back it. As it stands, it would lead to the ban of way to many guns that hunters use. It was written with too broad of a brush, which I feel was intentional.[:'(]

I hate it when anti gunners said theres going to be a flood of Tec 9's and Uzi's on teh streets, when they werent even covered in the ban. I didnt know the .223 round was engineered for maximum damage. if thats what they wanted, then our boys would be using the .30-06, which gets teh job done a helluva lot better than that puny little .22 round.
oh, friz, as much as i hate to say this, check out Field & stream or outdoor life, bush suppports teh ban in both interviews. i was really disappointed he did that, as its merely a political ploy.
I am truly sorry that your husband did not duck when the shots were fired at President Reagan. May I remind you that the gun laws in Washington DC at the time of your husbands' unfortunate injuries were among the most stringent in the world?
What I am somewhat suprised about is your continued obsession with the cosmetic features of guns, as opposed to features that actually add to their lethal nature. A flash suppressor, bayonet lug, or pistol grip do not make a certain type of gun more lethal. I, too, support a ban on assault weapons. But I support a REAL ban. An assault weapon is ANY gun fired at a living human being. Such a gun may come in any caliber, have any size magazine, and have any cosmetic features (or lack thereof). It, however, becomes an assault weapon once it is used in the commission of a crime, an "assault" if you will. My opponent in the current election supports judges who seem to feel that criminals who commit crimes like those committed on your husband and President Reagan are simply "victims" of bad homes, bad marriages, or not enough lithium. I support judges who lock away criminals using guns in the commission of crimes for a long, long time!
I ask you to consider this. I also ask you to consider what a bill that outlaws bayonet lugs, flash supressors, and pistol grips will do to reduce crime.
Remember, your husband was shot with a .22 caliber revolver, a weapon not covered by the assault weapons ban.
Sincerely,
George W. Bush
President of the United States
Ps. BTW, Senator Kerry recently admitted to owning a chinese-built assault weapon...of course, he could not seem to remember the make. Keep in mind if that is true, he possessed a weapon that he voted to outlaw.
